Job Description

The Santa Clarita Community College District/College of the Canyons is seeking a full-time Assistant Technical Director, Performing Arts Center (PAC) in the Instruction Division.

Salary Placement:
This twelve (12) month per year position will be on an individual contract. This classified administrator position will be placed on Range 3 of the Administrator Salary Schedule. Step placement is based on experience. Initial salary step placement for new employees is customarily at step 1, 2, or 3 ($6,678.00 / $6,778.00 / $6,880.00 per month) of this 20-step salary range.

All administrators are on an employment contract and exempt from overtime and compensatory time accumulation.

Overall Responsibilities:
Under the direction of the Production and Technical Director, Performing Arts Center, the Assistant Technical Director, Performing Arts Center assists in the technical direction of instructional, community, and professional productions at the College.

Example of Duties

Essential Job Duties:

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:


  • Assists in the supervision of all technical crew (both instructional and professional) in both the Main Stage and Black Box Theatres.
  • Schedules all adult hourly/short-term employee crew for community and instructional/institutional productions.
  • Assists in the advancement and production meetings/tours for all community rentals.
  • Logs all technical crew hours and keeps accurate time sheets for daily calls.
  • Assists in the requests for price quotes and contracts for all rental equipment for commercial acts, city users, and other rentals.
  • Communicate and advance all production needs for community and fair market users of the Performing Arts Center.
  • Assists in the supervision of all facility maintenance and repairs.
  • Assists in maintaining an accurate inventory of all equipment and production expendables (tape, hardware, lamps, gel, etc.).
  • Provides full supervision of the space and technical crews when the Technical Director is absent.
  • Sets up audience risers and seating for the black box.
  • Assists in the enforcement of all fire and safety codes and practices.
  • Coordinates with on-campus audio/visual department for audio/visual equipment as required.
  • Supervises students in the installation of scenery, lighting, sound, and video needs for college performing arts productions and other relevant institutional productions in the Main Stage and Black Box Theatres.
  • Completes working drawings and converts necessary instructional department design drawings into construction drawings.
  • . Supervises the scene shop, Main Stage, and Black Box Theatres during instructional labs.
  • Coordinates with the Operations Manager to establish staff and budgetary needs for instructional department designs.
  • Acts as the liaison between the Operations Manager and Production/Technical Director to establish build and technical/dress rehearsal schedules for Instructional Department productions.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Demonstrated Knowledge and Abilities:

Knowledge of:
  • Basic theatrical carpentry skills including operation of standard scene shop power and hand tools.
  • Electrical and wiring skills including the ability to wire and maintain standard stage pin and Edison connectors, conventional lighting fixtures, and practicals for productions.
  • Digital and analog audio systems and the ability to operate a 48 24-channel digital control board console.
  • Standard theatrical rigging practices and the ability to safely install trussing over the stage and house.
  • Managerial skills and the ability to process and file time sheets and purchase orders.
  • Computer skills including the operation of Microsoft and CAD programs.


Ability to:
  • Provide technical and responsible assistance to faculty, students and production team.
  • Make effective decisions, use professional judgment and take independent actions.
  • Work within constricted time frames.
  • Demonstrate effective computer skills as required to perform duties.
  • Accurately make any arithmetical calculations necessary to monitor expenditures, work within budget limitations and prepare purchase requisitions.

Qualifications and Minimum Requirements

Minimum Requirements:

Experience:
Minimum of three years professional experience as an Assistant Technical Director, Master/Theatrical Carpenter, a Master/Theatrical Electrician, or Audio Engineer. Experience must include at least two years supervising student or intern crews in a theatrical setting and at least one year of experience advancing technical needs for a touring production or a performing arts center.

Education:
An Associate’s degree (equivalent of 60 semester units) in any field is acceptable with coursework in Theater or Technical Theater.

Licenses/Certifications:
Possession and maintenance of a valid California driver’s license.

Desirable Qualifications:


  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Theatre Production and Design.
  • Two years experience in the operation of ETC control boards and dimmers, Martin and Vari-lite intelligent instruments, and hanging and focusing of conventional lighting instruments.
  • Two years experience in the operation of a counterweight fly system.
  • One year experience in management of labor schedules and payroll.
  • One year experience in theatrical carpentry for a university or professional theatrical shop.


Physical Characteristics:

The physical demands for this position include the ability to lift and stack objects up to 100 pounds occasionally and frequently exert 10 to 25 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Work involves walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, twisting/turning and reaching in awkward positions; bending at the waist. Work involves sitting plus frequent periods of standing and walking, which may include climbing staircases, and may include climbing ladders and stairs. Hand and digit dexterity to operate tools and equipment specific to the trade. Utilize near and far vision and depth perception. Hearing and speech to communicate and provide information to others. Must be able to perceive the nature of sound, utilize near and far vision, depth perception, provide oral information, and possess the manual dexterity to operate computers and related equipment. Handle and work with various materials and objects which are essential aspects of this position.
