Description

In accordance with the organizational chart and overall plan of Vance-Granville Community College, the Instructor, Adult Basic Skills reports to the Director of College and Career Readiness. The Instructor, Adult Basic Skills is responsible for teaching assigned classes; assisting with all instructional activities such as maintaining class records, syllabi, objectives, tests, and lesson plans; developing, maintaining, and evaluating educational materials; assessing student learning outcomes and demonstrating the use of the results to make improvements to the course/program; maintaining posted office hours; and participating as a member of assigned institutional committees.

Essential Duties

 

  • Demonstrate a thorough and accurate knowledge of their field or discipline and make subject matter relevant.
  • Learn and use technology to enhance teaching and the educational experience when appropriate. Employ available instructional technology, i.e., the Internet, distance education courses, interactive technology, when appropriate.
  • Provide formal and informal assessment of each student to determine appropriate initial basic skills placement level. Ensure students are pre-test and post-test each student at least once per academic year.
  • Develop and implement curriculum for basic skills students.
  • Provide instruction that reflects varied learning styles of basic skills students.
  • Encourage the development of communication skills and higher order thinking skills through appropriate assignments.
  • Select appropriate materials for the instructional environment.
  • Maintain organized student class records that represent accurate and current class attendance, student academic performance, progress, and contact hours.
  • Submit accurate and complete documents related to the instruction of basic skills (this includes but is not limited to LEIS documents, class rosters and attendance reports) at the end of each semester or term to the Office of Adult Basic Education.
  • Implement innovative techniques to retain students until educational goals are attained.
  • Engage in a program of professional development.
  • Maintains confidentiality of student information.
  • Exercise stewardship of college facilities and materials.
  • Participate in meetings and events required by the College, division, and program administrators.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the Coordinator or Dept. Chair, Adult Basic Skills.
Work Environment:
Work is typically performed in a classroom/lab environment.

 

Qualifications

Education and Experience Required:


  • Bachelor’s Degree from a regionally accredited institution in reading, language, and math and previous teaching experience, or previous teaching experience in Adult Education or related field


Education and Experience Preferred:
  • Master’s Degree in reading, language, and math and previous teaching experience, or previous teaching experience in Adult Education or related field
