NC State University is seeking an energetic, innovative, student-centered leader for the position of Coordinator, Outdoor Adventures. We seek an individual with proven leadership experience capable of working in a fast-paced, results-oriented team. The candidate will empower student and professional staff to cultivate world-class wellness and recreation programs, services and facilities that promote and enhance student success inside and outside of the classroom.

Essential Job Duties

The Coordinator, Outdoor Adventures directs and is responsible for the Outdoor Equipment Rental Center and the climbing center. The candidate will ensure all programs operate within required risk management procedures and will oversee the implementation of safety standards. This position reports to the Assistant Director, Outdoor Adventures.
To accomplish this the following is required:
  • Provide leadership and direct the climbing center and outdoor adventures equipment rental center, which has over 4,500 unique participants and over 24,000 contact hours annually. Independently manage day-to-day operations, including staffing, scheduling, workshops, clinics, special events, registration, equipment maintenance and replacement, and inventory control.
  • Responsible for all aspects of supervision (hiring, disciplining, terminating, performance evaluations) of more than 50 student Program Assistants, Supervisors, Climbing Wall Specialists and Rentals Assistants (equivalent to more than 15 FTE). Facilitate training, mentoring and continuing education opportunities for staff. Responsible for managing time cards and bi-weekly payroll for respective student staff. Provide expert on-site supervision of staff.
  • Responsible for risk management of all climbing and bouldering spaces, climbing center infrastructure including route setting, cleaning, equipment inspection, maintenance and care, and applicable equipment and structure inspections. Ensure staff are properly trained on safety and risk management best practices, and users are being properly educated on safety and risk management guidelines.
  • Manage and create route setting for various activities such as bouldering, top rope climbing, autobleays, lead climbing, and competition setting, as well as training new setters on proper work at height procedures, and setting best practices.
  • Create workshops, certifications, and custom programs to include Belay Certifications and workshops, Lead belay Certification and workshops, climbing movement workshops, autobelay and climbing center orientations, finding clients for custom programs and group rentals, and securing program agreements, as well as training student staff to instruct the variety of clinics and orientations offered at the climbing center.
  • Manage point of sale through InnoSoft Fusion software. Includes implementing department cash handling procedures, payment transactions and daily transaction reconciliation.
  • Manage Fusion program registrations and Fusion rental equipment inventory.
  • Responsible for the specific and direct fiscal management of the climbing center and outdoor adventures equipment rental center. Coordinate purchasing efforts to maintain appropriate equipment and inventory.
  • Conduct assessments to determine satisfaction levels, areas of improvement and potential sectors to target among staff and participants. Participate in overall assessment planning and goal setting.
  • Implement goals, expectations and procedures for programs, equipment and service management based on national data, trends and best practices.
  • Assist with the development and execution of marketing strategies for Outdoor Adventures programs and services.
  • Assist with assessment and evaluation efforts for the climbing center and outdoor adventures equipment rental center identifying participation levels, program participant interests, learning and development objectives. Develop recommendations and implement new programs and activities.
  • Assist with all Outdoor Adventure programming as needed, including trips and challenge course programming.
  • Serve as department liaison to campus partners that include but are not limited to Health and Exercise Studies, Transportation, Sustainability, Centennial Campus and the College of Natural Resources to develop outdoor-related collaborative programs that support student success.
  • Work collaboratively with campus partners and community organizations to form strong relationships designed to establish a long-term vision for Schenck Forest, Lake Raleigh Woods and Lake Raleigh.
  • Work independently to problem solve and think critically, with minimal supervision.
  • Assist as needed in all required departmental functions.

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in business administration, recreation or a related field and two years of related experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in business administration, recreation or a related field.
  • Two years experience managing a collegiate recreation climbing wall. This may include a graduate assistantship.
  • Experience in route setting for a variety of activities such as bouldering, top rope climbing, autobleays, lead climbing, and competition setting.
  • Experience with equipment rental program.

Required License(s) or Certification(s)

  • Climbing Wall Instructor certification (through Professional Climbing Instructors Association, American Mountain Guides Association, the Climbing Wall Association, or similar).
  • Valid North Carolina Driver’s License or the ability to obtain a North Carolina Driver’s License within 60 days of hire.
