The CRNA Supervisor will assume supervisory responsibilities and clinical coordination of the staff Nurse Anesthetists providing evaluation, counseling, and expert consultation. The incumbent provides administrative and clinical practice leadership to Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists. Manages assigned staff and functions by assigning work, developing work procedures consistent with hospital policy, establishing work schedules and monitoring work performance performed by subordinates in order to meet agreed-upon goals, objectives, In collaboration with the department management, the supervisor will participate in developing structured associated metrics for assessing outcomes of care and quality of care metrics; in ensuring that CRNAs meet various state and federal regulatory agency requirements.

Schedules and coordinates the activities of the nurse anesthetists engaged in administering anesthetics to patients during surgical procedures. Monitors the effects of specific anesthesia, drugs, techniques, and patient reactions. Develops, recommends, and implements procedures pertaining to the administration of anesthetics. Must function in the areas of supervision, clinical, and leadership responsibilities.

Under the supervision of the department chair, and under medical supervision of an anesthesiologist, perform safe anesthesia care, consisting of the following: pre-operative assessment, writing of appropriate pre-op orders as specified by approved standard procedure, administration of all types of anesthetics and techniques, patient monitoring intra-operatively, provides for safe intra-op course and emergence and assists as necessary in post-operative care.

Supervises nurse anesthetists ensuring safe and effective patient care. Serves as a role model and expert clinician. Assists with the administration and management of personnel, fiscal, and material resources. Performs other duties as assigned.

• Must be a graduate from an accredited nurse anesthesia program.

• Must possess a valid California RN and CRNA license in accordance with and accessible on the California Board of Registered Nursing website.

• Must possess a current board certification as a Nurse Anesthetist, in accordance with NBCRNA.

• Current ART certification, or BLS/CPR and ACLS certifications at time of hire with commitment to get UCSD ART within six (6) months of hire date.

• Advanced clinical experience as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist providing direct patient care.

• In-depth knowledge of patient care clinical standards, systems, external regulations and internal policies.

• Strong leadership skills to effectively supervise clinicians, manage complex workflow and multiple priorities.

• Exceptional interpersonal skills necessary to act as an ongoing liaison among CRNAs, residents, fellows, and physician faculty. Foster and promote open communication. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with staff, patients and families.

• Working knowledge of human resources management practices and policies.

• Demonstrated ability to train, monitor, evaluate, and document CRNA performance.

• Proven ability to coordinate the scheduling and daily activities of nurse anesthetists to provide adequate OR anesthesia coverage and learning experiences of students.

• Demonstrated ability to supervise, evaluate, and counsel all staff CRNAs regarding performance of clinical anesthesia.

• Proven ability to perform classroom lectures on anesthesia-related topics as assigned. Knowledge of clinical instructional techniques of nurse anesthesia students at all levels of training.

• Experienced providing anesthesia services and airway management according to level of expertise and providing anesthesia patient care to all ages.

• Expertise rendering anesthesia/anesthesia related care to facilitate diagnostic, therapeutic or surgical procedures in a trauma setting.

• Experienced with pre-anesthetic preparation and evaluation, anesthetic induction maintenance and emergence.

• Proven ability to maintain detailed medical information in an organized and easily retrievable manner using online medical systems such as Epic.

• Excellent writing skills to prepare clear and concise medical reports, laboratory data and progress notes as well as policies, procedures and protocols for patient care management.

• Working knowledge of operating room standards and techniques, and of all types of treatment and modalities necessary for patient care and well-being.

• Lead or supervisory experience.

• Recent experience with complex anesthetic cases.

• Ability to place central and arterial lines independently as needed for appropriate anesthetic management.

• Familiarity with patient centered perioperative management such as ERAS.

• Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.
• Must be willing to work at all UC San Diego Health locations.

• Due to advanced practice credentialing eligibility, clinical advanced practice experience must be within the last two years gained through school or work experience.
