The Counseling Center assists NC State students experiencing personal, academic or vocational problems. The goal of the Counseling Center is to provide students with professional counseling services and outreach to help them cope with issues that may impede successful academic performance. The Counseling Center also offers crisis intervention and psychological/ psychiatric assessment as well as consultation with others who have concerns about the mental/ emotional state of NC State students. Our services are primarily short term in nature and we make referrals to other helping professionals and community agencies as appropriate. Members of the counseling center commit to:

Essential Job Duties

To provide psychiatric evaluations, consultations, emergency psychiatric services, and medication management. This position will have limited on-call responsibilities and participate in psychiatric hospitalizations.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Evaluate students in crisis for appropriate emergency disposition.
  • Evaluate students for possible medication. Begin and stabilize medications when appropriate.
  • Provide consultations to the Campus Health Services (CHS) positions.
  • Participate in on-going medication programs as they are developed.
  • Assist with limited consultation in emergency after hours medication consultations.
  • Participate in policy development with the directors of Counseling, CHS, and other services in CHS.
  • Participate in continuing education (CE) activities.

Minimum Education and Experience

Relevant professional degree and licensure in the appropriate clinical field of psychology, social work, or mental health.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Strong clinical skills 
  • Experience in handling crisis situations
  • Strong interpersonal skills 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a University Counseling Center is preferred.
