The Position:
The College seeks a full-time, tenure-track faculty member in Administration of Justice. The ideal candidate will share the College's commitment to educating a racially and socioeconomically diverse student population.

Start date of this assignment: Fall 2024.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties below are representative of the duties of the classification and are not intended to cover all of the duties performed by the incumbent(s) of any particular position. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the scope of work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to this classification.
  • Teach courses in the Administration of Justice Program, including daytime, evening, online, hybrid, and/or dual enrollment schedules
  • Develop and evaluate curricula appropriate to the different learning needs of students as well as develop student learning outcomes
  • Provide a classroom environment that promotes and stimulates learning for every student
  • Use and stay abreast of current pedagogies and technologies that are effective in a diverse classroom
  • Consult with students during regularly-scheduled office hours
  • Collaborate with other program faculty and staff to use assessment techniques to maximize the effectiveness of instruction and student success
  • Form and maintain an advisory committee of industry professionals
  • Serve as a member of division, college, and district committees
  • Perform other professional duties as required by contract or divisional and institutional needs



A portion of the teaching assignment will consist of evening or weekend classes.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Possession of any Bachelors degree or higher AND two years of professional experience in public safety career fields OR any Associate degree AND six years of professional experience in public safety career fields OR the equivalent (see below)
  • Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to, and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, ethnic, neurodivergent, and LGBTQIA+ backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff as these factors relate to the need for equity minded-practice both within and outside of the classroom

Degree Equivalence
The applicant possesses a degree(s) with similar content to those listed for the relevant discipline. The name of the degree is close to that specified on the Disciplines List but the degree either has a different title or area of expertise or the coursework is slightly different.

Academic Background Equivalence
Related to disciplines in which a Masters Degree is not generally expected or available. The applicant must have completed at least 24 semester units of coursework in the academic field and must possess at least the equivalent level of achievement and the equivalent in breadth, depth of understanding, and rigor in each of the following:

i) a broad cultural education usually met by the general education requirements for any Bachelors or Associates Degree, and

ii) a detailed study of the discipline in breadth, depth, and rigor, usually met by course work required for the degree major.

Professional Achievement Equivalence
The applicant must have completed the General Education requirements for that degree and show evidence of outstanding professional achievement and/or substantial training in the requested field. The applicant must submit substantial evidence, which demonstrates that his/her preparation, teaching experience, work experience, and ability are equivalent to those expected from a person who meets the minimum qualifications.

  • Successful experience in teaching or evidence of preparation to teach the full range of Administration of Justice courses



Evidence of outstanding ability as a teacher:
In addition to a short classroom teaching demonstration and written skills demonstration that will be part of the interview process, appropriate evidence includes, but is not limited to, experience, training, or achievement that the candidate has:
  • The ability to engage with the development of Credit for Prior Learning
  • The ability to teach both theoretical concepts and practical skills needed for public safety employment
  • A commitment to and proficiency in creating curricula and methods of delivery that reflect present department standards and practices
  • Evidence of training and/or history of effective interaction with students at the basic and developmental levels
  • Knowledge of program-specific data collection and data analysis
  • The ability to use instructional methods that emphasize cooperation and collaboration and that reflect cultural sensitivity and interdisciplinary approaches to the subject matter
  • The ability to motivate students from a broad spectrum of academic, socioeconomic, ethnic, neurodivergent, and LGBTQIA+ backgrounds, as well as levels of preparation
  • Experience in computer-based applications and modern technologies for teaching administration of justice courses
  • Knowledge of the issues surrounding the training and employment of police and public safety positions
  • Experience or familiarity with the development of student learning outcomes and with assessment, as well as program review, for administration of justice courses
  • A familiarity with and willingness to expand the use of technology appropriate to the subject areas of the assignment, including distance education
  • The willingness to collaborate in college-wide and departmental activities to assess and improve student learning outcomes
  • A familiarity with proposal writing, especially to support learning communities and ancillary activities and/or to enhance professional development opportunities
  • An understanding of and commitment to the role and purpose of the community college, including the mission and values of Skyline College
  • The ability to use teaching methods that emphasize cooperation and collaboration and engage students actively in their studies, encouraging them to become critical thinkers and independent learners
Evidence of effectiveness as a colleague:
  • Proven ability to take responsibility for Comprehensive Program Review, Annual Program Planning, and other departmental obligations and duties
  • Skills to promote and advocate for, lead, and effectively manage the Administration of Justice department
  • Maintain and grow community partnerships including but not limited to an Advisory Committee, connections with local employers, etc.
  • Ability to stay current with, comply and put into practice local, regional, and state law
  • Ability and desire to work collaboratively with faculty members and staff to enhance instruction, curriculum, and student success
  • A commitment to professional responsibilities outside of the classroom through enthusiastic contributions to department, division and college activities


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Masters degree desired in related disciplines; Supervisory Level POST Certificate; backgrounds in policing, criminology, and/or the practice of law related to criminology and the criminal justice system are all encouraged
  • Recent experience working with racially minoritized and other disproportionately-impacted students in the classroom and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups within higher education and particular fields shape patterns of participation and outcomes
  • Willingness to examine and remediate ones instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized and other disproportionately impacted students
  • Experience fostering community partnerships and collaboration
  • Knowledge and experience in concepts such as Modern Policing, Restorative Justice, and Community Engagement
  • Experience and expertise in culturally-responsive teaching in administration of justice
  • Demonstrated ability to address equity gaps within administration of justice courses and classrooms
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the implications of the Hispanic-Serving Institution designation for institutional, departmental and instructional practices
