About the Department

The Department of Population Health and Pathobiology trains doctors of veterinary medicine who will specialize in understanding and reducing disease in animal populations, particularly food animals. Disease in these populations poses serious risks to food safety, has economic implications, and, in cases where the disease is communicable to humans, is a significant public health hazard.

Our faculty are recognized experts in the fields of epidemiology and public health, microbiology and immunology, parasitology, pathology, poultry, ruminant, and swine health management, as well as pharmacology and risk assessment. Our goals are to advance veterinary medical science through innovative basic and applied research, and by mentoring and inspiring students, providing world-class clinical and diagnostic services, and offering the public the latest knowledge through innovative extension and engagement activities.

The Mochizuki lab studies the pathology of cancer and other diseases in domestic animals (e.g., dogs, cats) using molecular biology methods analyzing mostly DNA and RNA.

Essential Job Duties

The position will be responsible for the management of the daily operations, technical planning, conducting experiments within the laboratory, and retention of detailed and accurate records, including maintaining appropriate supply inventory, equipment performance and upkeep, clinical sample handling, and regulatory compliance to permit timely and successful execution of experiments.

Other Responsibilities

Additionally, the position will aid in training of students (undergraduate, graduate, professional) and veterinary residents to support these research efforts.

Minimum Education and Experience

Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree, or relevant Bachelor’s degree in science (biology field, especially genetics, cell biology, strongly favored) plus 3 or more years of independent research experience, or substantative relevant independent experience and education.

All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Microsoft office (MS Word, Excel), Google Docs. Must be able to learn new software as needed.
  • Strong verbal, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Possess technical and analytical skills in biomedical research, preferably molecular and cellular biology and genetics/genomics
  • Be able to multitask and work independently with a high level of initiative.
  • A high level of motivation and organization.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters degree in biological sciences field (e.g., Genetics, Cell biology)
  • Experience with DNA/RNA extraction, PCR (conventional/qPCR), gel electrophoresis, Sequencing (Sanger/Next generation sequencing
  • Experience with cell culture
  • Experience with microscopy
  • Veterinary technical experience (handling blood and tissue samples)
