Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Director of the National Quantum Lab (QLab) provides overall leadership in establishing the lab as a high-impact, globally-leading accelerator of practical quantum applications. QLab’s mission is to accelerate the enablement of innovation in multi-disciplinary quantum computing, networking and sensing applications, to spur the growth and awareness of quantum technologies and to have national recognition as a platform for innovation.

The QLab is the nation’s first user facility that enables the scientific community to pursue world-leading research through hands-on access to commercial-grade quantum computers, and the expertise to optimize it for a variety of use-cases, and a quantum network, the Mid-Atlantic Quantum Regional Internet (MARQI). QLab was initially launched as a joint partnership between the University of Maryland (UMD) and IonQ, Inc. (IonQ) focused on practical applications for quantum computing, then expanded to accelerating quantum interconnects and networking as a MARQI node. MARQI has a growing footprint in the Washington DC metro region and supports collaboration with many federal agencies, like NIST, NRL, ARL and others. In addition to supporting users with QLab’s technical staff, the QLab Fellows program provides them opportunities to collaborate with a translational community of both quantum researchers and quantum-engaged domain experts.

QLab serves UMD-affiliated students, faculty, researchers, staff and partners nationally. It is a foundational resource and key attractor for growing the regional quantum ecosystem through partnerships with the Quantum Startup Foundry and Mid-Atlantic Quantum Alliance. To expand the user base at UMD, QLab supports several classes, outreach efforts to undergraduate and graduate students, and a seed grant program for faculty. QLab also runs a Global User Program to support high-impact research around the world.
