Summary

The Prechter Bipolar Research Program at the University of Michigan carries out research in bipolar disorder, and are seeking two Research Techs to join our team. Through our flagship Longitudinal Study of Bipolar Disorder, we maintain an ongoing relationship with our participants that blends clinical, biological, and treatment outcomes with genetic research to provide clues to the course of bipolar disorder and to how each individual should be treated. We also have multiple other exciting ongoing studies based out of our lab.

Responsibilities*

With guidance from senior faculty and research personnel, in this role, you'll handle organizational and administrative details of assigned projects, and act as a liaison between study participants and the other members of the study team. Specific responsibilities will include, but are not limited to: 

  • Participant recruitment (through community connections, UMHealthResearch, Inpatient psychiatry, etc.)
  • Performing diagnostic screening, obtaining informed consent, and scheduling potential research subjects according to study inclusion/exclusion criteria. 
  • Coordinating study visits and long-term follow up with study participants, including some oversight of the day-to-day operations of the project. 
  • Collecting and entering data into appropriate systems for future analysis. 
  • Assess participant mood using standardized questionnaires. 
  • Perform other study procedures in accordance with study protocols. Other procedures may include: 
    • Collecting, processing, and managing biological samples (blood, and saliva). 
    • Neuropsychological testing
    • working with Mobile phone apps. 
    • Setting up and collecting EEG data
    • Assisting participants through an fMRI scan. 
  • Assisting in the preparation of IRB applications, progress reports, and other summary materials. 
  • Creating and managing study materials (Standard Operating Procedures, recruitment materials, etc.)

Opportunities also exist for individual research projects, as well as working with faculty members to develop scientific posters and papers. 

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field. 
  • One year of work experience in a mental health or research field. 
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills. 
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail. 
  • Quick thinking, problem-solving skills, and the ability to successfully switch between tasks quickly and frequently. 

Desired Qualifications*

  • Some understanding of bipolar disorder and mood instibility. 
  • Some familiarity with or specific interest in fMRI, EEG, Neuropsychological testing, and/or mobile mental health technologies. 
  • Familiarity with REDCap, Qualtrics, or similar data management software
  • Familiarity with MiChart, EPIC, or other Medical Charting systems. 
  • Ability to work comfortably with biological samples. 

Work Schedule

General hours for this position will be 9AM to 5PM, Monday through Friday. Some variation may occur in order to support study needs. 

Work Locations

This is a hybrid position. In-person work will take place at the Rachel Upjohn Building (4250 Plymouth Rd., Ann Arbor, MI). 

Individuals in this position will be expected to work onsite during training and onboarding and  approximately 2-3 days a week thereafter or as required by the needs of the study or program.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third-party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.

In addition to the screenings indicated above under Michigan law, a criminal history check including fingerprinting is required as a condition of transfer or employment for this position.
