The Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources has a wide variety strengths in forestry and natural resources management, policy and economics, environmental science and technology, wildlife and conservation biology, tree improvement, silviculture, forest biotechnology, and international forestry. The Department has over 90 full time faculty and staff, and more than 750 undergraduate and 150 graduate students. Faculty, staff, and students work together with business, industry, government, community groups, and non-government organizations to address a wide range of challenges facing our state and the world. Essential Job Duties

The Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources at North Carolina State University invites applicants for a full-time Research Assistant position in the Forest Biotech Group (FBG). The successful candidate is expected to work on one or more of the following research areas:

  • Forestry species propagation, cutting production, and greenhouse maintenance.
  • Tree tissue culture and regeneration
  • Phenotyping of tree growth, development, and stress response.

The Research Assistant will be expected to perform the following duties:

  • Ability to execute fundamental research activities for a single or multiple research project(s).
  • Ability to participate in formulating research methods and suggesting options for improving quality and recommending solutions.
  • Ability to perform tree tissue culture and transformation, tree maintenance in greenhouse, data/sample collection and analysis.
  • Ability to facilitate the preparation of proposals and publications.
  • Ability to work independently and conduct research and literature review tasks

Minimum Education and Experience

Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree, or relevant Bachelor’s degree plus 3 or more years of independent research experience, or substantive relevant independent experience and education. May require terminal degree and licensure.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Teamwork and excellent communication skills, independent scientific thinking and planning are expected.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • Proficiency in reporting writing, analysis, and communicating with the research team and project sponsors

Preferred Qualifications

Highly motivated, organized, and creative individual with a strong background in one or more of the following areas: forest tree propagation, tissue culture optimization, greenhouse maintenance, tree fertilization, pest control, and/or tree growth and development.
