Job Description

RESEARCH SCIENTIST 1, Aeronautics and Astronautics-Laboratory for Aviation and the Environment (LAE), to collaborate with senior researchers and principal investigators to co-lead research projects within the scope of LAE.  Responsibilities include leading research on lifecycle and techno-economic analysis of alternative energy carriers for aviation and system-level analysis of different carbon sources for sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) production; supporting education and capacity building on SAF in international contexts; publishing research results in leading journals/conferences; interacting with project sponsors from government/industry; taking on roles of project leadership and time and budget management; helping supervise students and postdocs on projects; helping develop junior researchers to meet their immediate objectives (e.g., theses and papers) and long-term career goals; participating in management of research projects, including proposal writing, staffing and budget planning, and outreach; and other duties as required.  

Job Requirements:

REQUIRED:  Ph.D. (or equivalent degree) in mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, or related field; two years’ related experience in a research environment (may include experience as a graduate student); background/expertise in modeling sustainable aviation fuels using lifecycle analysis and technoeconomic assessments; willingness to expand focus to provide strategic leadership/guidance for the development of projects within the full scope of LAE’s research; track-record of successful project delivery with government and industry sponsors; involvement in international policymaking and technical regulation of the aviation sector, especially ICAO CAEP, specifically covering assessments of fuels under regulatory schemes to reduce CO2 emissions; knowledge of the full range of SAF technologies; and strong verbal and written communication skills.  PREFERRED: strong organizational, time management, interpersonal, leadership, project management, and verbal and written communication skills; ability to interface with sponsors; and experience with academic advising and mentoring.  Job #23807
