Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Department of Family Science, in partnership with the University of Maryland Prevention Research Center and the Center for Health Literacy, seeks a full-time Community Outreach Coordinator to support our implementation of Tobacco Control Strategies to Achieve Health Equity: Engaging LGBTQ+ Communities in Maryland project.

Project Description:
The Implementing Tobacco Control Strategies to Achieve Health Equity: Engaging LGBTQ+ Communities in Maryland project is a grant-funded project that aims to reduce tobacco-related health disparities in Black and Latino/a/x lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning (LGBTQ) youth and young adults in Prince George’s and Montgomery Counties in Maryland. To achieve this goal, we are collaborating with groups that are inclusive of and reach LGBTQ+ youth and young adults. Our team partners with local community organizations, health departments, and state tobacco and control officials to develop, disseminate, and evaluate LGBTQ-inclusive tobacco prevention and control efforts in Prince George’s and Montgomery Counties. This project is funded through the CDC and Maryland Department of Health and provides experience with community engagement, health communication, implementation, research, and evaluation.

We seek a Community Outreach Coordinator to support our ongoing project activities and build our capacity to engage in training, education, and service support for tobacco prevention and quitting for Black and Latino/a/x LGBTQ+ youth and young adults in Prince George’s and Montgomery Counties and across Maryland.

Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Develop and maintain existing relationships with community and health services organizations serving Black and Latino/a/x LGBTQ+ youth and youth adults
  • Convene and lead Community Advisory Board meetings
  • Establish, foster, and maintain relationships with community organizations and coalitions
  • Identify and implement strategies to build community and health organizational capacity for tobacco prevention and cessation for Black and Latino/a/x LGBTQ+ youth and young adults, with team support
  • Attend and participate in trainings on tobacco prevention and health education
  • Attend weekly team meetings
  • Propose timelines and milestones for projects to ensure deadlines are met
  • Complete other administrative and community outreach duties as assigned
  • Demonstrate initiative and discretion to resolve routine challenges related to project goals and objectives
  • Travel to community spaces within Prince George’s and Montgomery Counties in Maryland to complete work duties

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
  • High school diploma.

Experience:
  • Experience working with Black, Latino/a/x and/or LGBTQ+ populations and organizations.
  • Experience working or volunteering in community-based and health promotion settings.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Written and oral fluency in English and Spanish.

Reliable transportation and ability to travel within Prince George’s and Montgomery Counties are required.

Preferences:

Preferences:
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in public health or a related field.
  • Work experience in tobacco prevention and cessation education and/or services.
  • Successful completion of a Community Health Worker training program.
  • Professional community engagement or organizing experience.

Additional Information:

Terms: This is a full-time position with benefits (including options for health, dental, and retirement). The position will be on a 6-month contingent contract with renewal options based on performance. The work will be performed remotely, on campus (as needed), and throughout Prince George’s and Montgomery Counties.
