Deputy Civil Space Flight Mission Area Executive

Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab

Job Description

Description

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (JHU/APL) is seeking a Deputy Civil Space Flight Mission Area Executive.  The JHU/APL Civil Space Flight Mission Area (CSFMA) delivers critical spaceflight hardware to NASA, international partners, and other U.S. government civilian agencies. It is responsible for all APL civil space flight programs in development and operations and is APL’s primary civil space sponsor interface. We pride ourselves on delivering first-of-their-kind, one-of-a-kind spaceflight hardware within cost and schedule constraints.  Our work includes design, fabrication, and operation of premier novel space systems, space science instruments, and advanced space technology.

The CSFMA at APL is seeking a dynamic, free-thinking industry leader to serve as Deputy Mission Area Executive (DepMAE).  The DepMAE will work with the Mission Area Executive in three critical areas:

  • Mission comes first - Enabling the success of CSF missions with a focus on large strategic missions. Work closely with Project and Program Managers and the larger organization to ensure the success of the Space Exploration Sector’s strategic missions, Dragonfly and the Interstellar Mapping and Anisotropy Probe as well provide guidance and leadership for our portfolio of higher risk and operational missions.
  • Adapt to the changing environment – take a leadership role in adapting APL processes, procedures and culture so it can better respond to the dynamic needs of our sponsors and to better integrate with the emerging capabilities of the U.S. commercial space industry.
  • People matter – Ensure APL has a diverse pipeline of leaders who can and are poised to manage across a wide range of project size, complexity and risk level.

In addition to the duties stated above, the DepMAE will partner with the MAE to manage the mission area.  The DepMAE is a critical member of the Space Exploration Sector’s Leadership Team.  The selectee will be responsible for helping to ensure that the Mission Area’s portfolio meets technical, cost, schedule and other programmatic objectives.  The DepMAE will help lead the changes necessary to better integrate CSFMA into the larger, dynamic space community through involvement in strategic initiatives and by increasing the Sector’s effectiveness by addressing the needs of higher risk projects and those projects that are in operations.

About APL's Space program: Over the past 25 years, the Space Exploration Sector at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) in Laurel, Maryland, has pushed the boundaries of what is possible; delivering game-changing impacts to sponsors like NASA and the Department of Defense. This includes historic, science space firsts like New Horizons reaching Pluto, Parker Solar Probe being the first to “touch” the sun, and the DART mission that redirected an asteroid for planetary defense. As a not-for-profit university affiliated research center, APL also delivered solutions to our nation’s national security challenges, as proven with the recent Deep Space Advanced Radar Concept (DARC) Tech Demo, and acts as a trusted partner with the US Space Force in space domain awareness and space-integrated warfare. APL teams are currently developing missions that will advance the search for life in the Solar System through programs such as Europa Clipper and Dragonfly, exploring the lunar and cislunar domains, and providing fundamental knowledge of our Sun’s influence on the near-Earth environment through IMAP and other research and technology endeavors.  We are also providing game changing solutions to the most difficult and important national security space challenges.
