We are seeking a cryptographer to help solve national security challenges. This role will enhance APL's Resilient Military Systems Group's ability to understand, analyze, improve, and communicate advanced cryptographic concepts and techniques. You will work with teams of mathematicians, computer scientists, and engineers whose goals are to improve the cyber security and resilience of tactical systems. As a Cryptographic Solutions Researcher, you will:

  • Provide recommendations on advanced cryptographic techniques that will impact the Laboratory and our sponsors
  • Combine cryptographic techniques to invent novel solutions to critical challenges
  • Optimize groundbreaking cryptographic techniques and protocols to operate within constrained environments
  • Envision and develop secure approaches to harness the power of cloud computing from tactical systems
  • Understand mathematical approaches of current advanced cryptographic schemes
  • Understand the impact and mitigations of proposed attacks against these techniques
  • Collaborate with industry and academia

 


Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

  • Possess a PhD in mathematics, computer science, computer engineering, or a related field.
  • Have published and presented cryptographic work in premier industry or academic settings.
  • Have demonstrated expertise in one or more of the following areas: Lattices, algebraic number theory, RLWE, FHE, SMPC, pairings-based crypto, ECC
  • Have experience with one or more programming language (e.g., python, java, C++, C, Golang).
  • Are willing and able to travel up to 20%.
  • Are able to obtain an Interim Secret level security clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain a TS/SCI level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you...

  • Have experience writing grant proposals to research organizations (e.g., NSF, DARPA, ONR).
  • Have taught a cryptography course at the graduate or undergraduate level.
  • Have experience implementing cryptographic protocols in resource constrained environments.
  • Have experience applying hardware acceleration to cryptographic protocols.
  • Have proficiency with operating system concepts and networking design.
  • Have experience maturing products from lower to higher technology readiness levels (TRLs).
  • Have a Top Secret or TS/SCI level clearance.
