About the Role
Novartis Biologics Research Center (BRC) is a leader at the cutting edge of innovative medicine development to improve patient lives. BRC builds the biologics pipeline in collaboration with Novartis Biomedical Research (NBR) Disease Areas and Platforms via a breadth of technologies for discovery of antibody, protein, gene therapy and RNA-based therapeutics.
We are seeking a highly motivated scientist to contribute to gene therapy development as part of the global community of investigators in the Cell & Gene Therapy (CGT) group within BRC. The successful candidate will work at the cutting edge of gene therapy delivery platform and technology and contribute to CGT Delivery programs. This role encompasses primarily lab-based responsibilities as outlined below. The scientist will take part in projects that will contribute to the development of novel capsid variants using internally developed screening platforms. The successful candidate with be a collaborative scientist with in-depth experience in cell and molecular biology, knowledge of virology (AAV and LVV) and assay development.
Key responsibilities:
* Participate and perform experiments in CGT Delivery including and not limited to molecular cloning and plasmid library production.
* Operate next-generation sequencing (NGS) platform instrumentation (Illumina, PacBio, etc.) and analyze data from targeted experiments is highly desired.
* Execute molecular biology assays to analyze in vitro and in vivo samples for characterization with techniques such as PCR/qPCR/dPCR, IHC/IF, and/or ELISA/MSD.
* Co-lead in vivo biodistribution and platform analysis projects as part of internal CGT programs.
* Develop molecular biology assays for the specific needs of internal CGT programs.
* Prepare quality data sets and reports adhering to the good research practices and quality culture across BRC.
* Present results at appropriate internal and external meetings and conferences.

Role Requirements

* Scientific background with an BS in Biological Sciences or a closely related discipline with 1+ years of academic or industry lab related experience. Industry experience is preferred. Masters preferred.
* This lab-based position is located in San Diego, CA and will not have the ability to be located remotely.
* Experience with molecular biology techniques (such as and not limited to DNA, RNA isolation from NHP and mice tissues, cDNA synthesis, Biodistribution - ddPCR analysis, contribute towards in-vivo and in-vitro assays, ELISA, IHC, nucleic acid extraction, qPCR, transcriptomics) is required.
* Willingness to independently pursue assay and technological development to advance CGT.
* The position requires the ability to work collaboratively in a dynamic team centric scientific environment and adaptability to emerging project/group needs, excellent communication, and presentation skills, both written and verbal, and strong interpersonal skills
Desirable Requirements:
* Experience with operating next-generation sequencing (NGS) platform instrumentation (Illumina, PacBio, etc.) and analysis of short-read and long-read sequencing data is highly desired.
* Skills in measuring/performing viral expression, purification, quantification and detection, DNA and RNA sequencing are a highly desired.
* Experience with histological, immunohistochemical or immunofluorescence techniques is also preferred.
* Experience in animal models, CGT delivery, and molecular virology, mammalian cell culture and virus production, and purification is desired.

Novartis Compensation and Benefit Summary:
The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between $80,000and $120,000/year; however, while salary ranges are effective from 1/1/24 through 12/31/24, fluctuations in the job market may necessitate adjustments to pay ranges during this period. Further, final pay determinations will depend on various factors, including, but not limited to geographical location, experience level, knowledge, skills, and abilities. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a sign-on bonus, restricted stock units, and discretionary awards in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered.
