The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. We serve military, medical, academic and government clients by administering, managing and supporting preeminent scientific programs that benefit members of the armed forces and civilians alike. This position will be in support of the Naval Health Research Center (NHRC) in San Diego, CA. Service members with injuries often require numerous doctor visits to diagnose and treat the symptoms following their injuries. In particular vestibular dysfunction, sleep disorders, and cognitive issues often occur in this population. Rehabilitation for these patients with insomnia or concussion, can be a long and expensive process. It is necessary that we find better ways to prevent, diagnose, assess, and provide more effective treatments that are available to Service members in a wider range of settings, including clinics, deployment sites and even within the home.

HJF is seeking a Research Engineer to be responsible for planning and conducting biomedical research and development in support of a portfolio of projects in regenerative medicine that includes neuro-regeneration, orthopaedic tissue repair, biomaterials design, 3D tissue engineering, and 3D bioprinting.

Responsibilities
    Leads small teams of researchers and establishes collaborations to keep projects on track; develops solutions to overcome technical challenges. Leads teams of research personnel in the execution of R&D projects,
  • Participates in the preparation of FDA filings to support clinical translation and maintain interactions with external partners at universities and companies.
  • Designs and executes experiments and ensures completion of technical milestones associated with each project.
  • Participates as a key member of the group to develop future strategy and plans for new projects; serves as a key innovator on the team. Serves as a key participant in the preparation of project proposals, authoring publications, and presenting the group's work at national-level conferences.
  • Leads the preparation of technical updates, reports, and publications.
  • Maintains state-of-the-art knowledge of relevant technological developments regenerative medicine, physical medicine and rehabilitation.
  • May include budgetary responsibility to include plan/forecast.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Assigned Lead: May recommend the following: employee hiring, disciplinary action, and starting salaries; provide input on employee performance evaluations

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in biomedical engineering or similar required, Master's degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 6-8 years experience in rehabilitation research required

Work Environment

  • This position will take place primarily in a laboratory setting.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Thorough understanding of the underlying principles of physics, mathematics and physiology as it applies to biomedical engineering.
  • Knowledge of regenerative medicine and physical medicine & rehabilitation preferred.
  • Ability to program in a variety of software packages and languages including Matlab, Labview, and C++.

    Experience with networking and Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

    communications.

  • Technical expertise in hardware integration of virtual reality (VR) equipment including motion platforms,

    multi projection screens, head-mounted displays, and synchronization of external equipment with analog

    inputs.

  • Ability to run Unity applications and connected hardware platforms

  • US Citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a T3/Secret Clearance
