Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Safety Support Assistant provides support to the Safety and Risk Management Department. The assistant performs a variety of complex clerical tasks and supports work involving specific routines, broadly defined policies and procedures, as well as complex duties relating to office operations that require good knowledge of College personnel policies and procedures. Greets and interacts with the public and employees, which require tact, discretion and courtesy.  Works cooperatively with staff, students and general public.
 
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
1. Assists in physical inspections of the College grounds, building, equipment and operations; assists in identifying hazards and incidents of regulatory non-compliance.
2. Assists in the collections, storage and arrangement for disposal of biologic, chemical and other hazardous waste streams to help maintain the colleges’ conditionally.
3. Assists in functions and activities of the College wide safety plan, emergency and crisis response plan.
4. Assists in creating, updating, and revising building layouts.
5. Assists in maintaining and managing EHS programs, policies and procedures that comply with federal, state and local rules and regulations.  
6. Assists in the inspection of emergency safety equipment.
7. Performs other related duties as assigned by immediate supervisor.

Qualifications/Certifications/Licenses/Skills

Required:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Proficient with all Microsoft Programs, especially Outlook, Word, Excel & Power Point.
  •  Experience in computer aided drafting.
 
Preferred:
  • Occupational Safety and/or Risk Management degree or certification.
  • One to three years’ experience in emergency management and/or safety and risk management.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to handle sensitivity and confidential situations and documentaries.
  • Ability to operate most standard office equipment.
  • Must be detailed-oriented and possess solid organizational skills.
  • Able to work independently, manage multiple and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to prioritize work flows.
  • Ability to develop & maintain effective working relationships with employees within department/division, employees of other divisions and general public.
  • Excellent telephone, written and oral communications skills. Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.

Physical Requirements  
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit.  
The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, or crouch.  
The employee must occasionally lift and/or move items weighing up to 50 pounds.

Work is performed in a standard office environment.
