Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
The Fermentation Science program (hereinafter FERM) at the Universities at Shady Grove (USG) is
currently seeking a Program Coordinator.
The Program Coordinator will have an essential role in undergraduate academic advising, transfer student recruitment, admissions, and administrative functions of the Fermentation Science B.S. degree program at the Universities at Shady Grove campus. The Program Coordinator will be responsible for offering regular academic advising appointments to guide current Fermentation Science majors toward academic success, and will serve as the point of contact for prospective Fermentation Science majors, outlining admissions requirements and transfer processes. The individual will participate in recruitment activities and events at area community colleges, and surrounding areas, including tabling events, transfer fairs, and classroom visits, and will develop creative and engaging student recruitment materials and assist in efforts to increase the visibility of the Fermentation Science program at Shady Grove. The Fermentation Science at Shady Grove Program Coordinator will also work directly with the program director on a daily basis to support the functions of the program, and will collaborate regularly with colleagues both at the Universities at Shady Grove and at the University of Maryland in College Park.
The Fermentation Science program is brought to you through a collaboration between the Department of Nutrition and Food Science and the Department of Plant Science and Landscape Architecture at UMD. Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
Bachelor’s degree required in higher education, fermentation, student affairs, counseling, or a related discipline.
Experience:

Experience:
- Two to three years of professional experience in college/university services.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
- The ideal candidate will possess skills appropriate to the job of recruiting, marketing, and advising.
- The candidate must demonstrate the ability to use computer systems from various institutions as needed to create, update, and maintain records and provide high-quality, efficient customer service.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills are a must.
- Professional demeanor, excellent customer skills and ability to handle a fast-paced work environment required.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are required
- Detail oriented and proficient in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, and able to create and maintain various databases
Preferences:
Preferences:
- Master’s degree in higher education, fermentation, plant sciences, food sciences, student affairs, counseling, or a related discipline
- One to three years higher education experience preferred
- Direct student academic advising, recruitment, and admissions experience, as well as experience with students from diverse backgrounds
- Demonstrated skills in social media management and promotional materials development
- Experience working with food, fermentation and/or related industries
- Experience working with community colleges and large universities
- Basic web design skills
- Familiarity with UMD academic advising systems and databases
- Demonstrated skills and experience in collaboration, the ability to interact well with colleagues, faculty, students, and both internal and external audiences
