Overview

The Clinical Research Laboratory (CRL) Medical Technologist is responsible for processing all clinical samples from patients on clinical trials at the institute. The technologist needs to follow and comply with lab procedures provided by study sponsors and study teams. Procedures include but are not limited to serum and plasma separation, isolation and enumeration of mononuclear cells and preparation of slides. In addition the tech serves as a lab resource for the study teams. The Technologist II must comply with all institute policies regarding the confidentiality of patient information and lawful use of any computerized patient data.

Responsibilities

  • Process samples as indicated in provided lab manuals.
  • Maintain all record keeping and Quality Control requirements as needed.
  • Work with study teams for all sample processing procedures and manuals
  • Work with study teams for all kit related requirements
  • Work with Clinical labs for sample tracking and shared patient samples
  • Work with couriers to send samples to external labs
  • Coordinate shipping and receiving of samples to and from Chestnut Hill and Longwood Center
  • Must have ability to train others
  • Demonstrates proficiency performing all lab procedures for over 200 active clinical trials. Lab procedures are driven by study sponsors and are not standard across all protocols.
  • Demonstrates sound judgment and critical thinking skills to follow complex sample collection flowcharts for multiple drugs and multiple cohort clinical trials conducted over multiple disease centers.
  • Demonstrates strong problem solving ability as samples are time sensitive and cannot be redrawn.
  • Assists study teams with data and sample information for internal and external audits.
  • Demonstrates good organizational skills and is detail oriented as samples are de-identified once processed.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, working as part of a team and interacting with several disease centers.
  • Demonstrates dependability under a variety of circumstances and is committed to provide the best and most reliable service possible, with minimal supervision.
  • Works efficiently and effectively, on a daily basis as well as when under pressure and during emergencies.
  • Asks questions and checks for understanding when instructions are given.
  • Uses good judgment, communicates well, and maintains high standards for patient care.
  • Serves as a resource to study teams for all sample collection and processing queries.
  • Follows all safety and infection control guidelines including the use of personal protective equipment

Qualifications

BS required; MLT (ASCP) or nationally recognized equivalent with 1-3 years experience preferred. Training in OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen Standard, Advanced Fire/Safety, Infection Control, and Departmental Safety is required annually
