Pre-clinical lab developing next generation cellular immunotherapies focused on CAR T cell immunotherapy for cancer is looking for an exceptionally motivated individual with past lab experience to join the lab team of Dr. Eric Smith, Director of Translational Research, Immune Effector Cell Therapies at Dana Farber. The lab takes projects from conception to transgene design /genetic engineering, through reduction to practice, in vitro and in vivo studies, and ultimately translation to the clinic. The position involves mammalian cell culture, flow cytometry, molecular biology (plasmid construction, CRISPR gene editing), viral transduction to generate gene modified immune effector cells.

Dr. Smith is deeply committed to the growth and success of each trainee that joins the lab. He believes that mentorship is not something that happens in the background as trainees pursue their research, but should be intentional, thought out, and personalized for each member of the group. He spends the time to meet trainees' individual needs, not only in terms of their scientific growth, but also with a focus on career goals and development.

An ability to work well with others as part of a cohesive team, take initiative, and creatively problem solve are a must. Normally receives detailed instructions on all work.

The research technician will assist scientists in performing scientific research and development of varying complexity. In general, they will assist in the set up, operation and maintenance of laboratory instruments and equipment, monitoring experiments, making observations and calculating and recording results.

This full-time position will also include some general lab duties as outlined below.

This position will start Summer 2024 or earlier.

Responsibilities

    • Basic biochemical, molecular, and cell biology skills as the applicant’s contribution is expected to contribute significantly toward developing research projects.
    • Opportunities to design and perform experiments both individually and collaboratively, and address problems in experimental protocols.
    • Analyze experimental data and interpret results to write reports and summaries of findings.  Expected to participate in formal and informal presentations of results.
    • Participate in grant application process and manuscript preparation as required.
    • Maintains detailed electronic notebook of all work-related activities.
    • Expected to provide intellectual and interactive commitment to position by keeping up with appropriate literature and research publications.
    • Responsible for the development, modification and improvement of standard operating procedures.
    • Set up, adjust, calibrate, clean, maintain and troubleshoot equipment.
    • Clean, maintain and prepare supplies and work areas and may be responsible for ordering of supplies.
    • May be responsible for the examination of animals and specimens to detect the presence of disease or other problems.
    • Intellectual input and co-authorship are encouraged.

     

    Research Technician

    No supervisory responsibilities. 

    Normally receives general instructions on routine work, detailed instructions on new projects or assignments.

Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s Degree required with a major in biology or chemistry preferred.   Typically requires a minimum of 1-4 years related experience.  Developing technical expertise, applies Institute policies and procedures to resolve a variety of issues.  Works on problems of moderate scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of a variety of factors.  Exercises judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action.  Builds productive internal/external working relationships

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

    • Learns and uses technical principles, processes, and concepts.
    • Applies Institute policies and procedures to resolve routine issues.
    • Works on problems of limited scope.
    • Follows standard practices and procedures in analyzing situations or data from which answers can be readily obtained.

    • Must have excellent communication skills (written and verbal) and be able to work with a wide variety of faculty and staff.

    • Ability to analyze information and use logic to address work-related issues and problems.
    • Must have attention to detail and be thorough in completing work tasks.
    • Ability to work within a team environment.
