WELCOME TO SANTA MONICA COLLEGE! Santa Monica College is looking for a highly detail-oriented individual with exceptional customer service skills and a strong background in cosmetology to play a key role in running the day-to-day operations of our Cosmetology Student Salon. The individual selected to fill this position will provide general administrative support to our Student Salon, including reception, cashiering, stockroom inventory, and ensuring compliance with industry safety standards. This position is scheduled to work 40 hours per week, 12 months per year on the Santa Monica College Main Campus.


Our Cosmetology Student Salon now contains new state-of-the-art equipment, including 15 new multi-functional skin care machines, so students can practice what they learn in the classroom on fellow students and provide a valuable service to the broader Santa Monica community. Salary Placement
New Employees: Generally, new employees start at the first step on the salary schedule. A new permanent classified employee may request a higher salary placement based on recruitment issues and/or additional training and experience which greatly exceeds the minimum requirements. Please note that salary placement above the third step requires additional approvals by Santa Monica College executive staff.

Current Employees: Upon promotion, the new salary for a current, permanent employee is based on Merit Rule 12.2.7. In accordance with this rule, employees are entitled to at least a one-step (5%) salary increase, and may be eligible for advanced step placement in accordance with established criteria.

About the Selection Process

The selection process tentatively consists of a Qualifications Appraisal Interview (weighted 100%), which may be preceded by a training and experience evaluation (pass/fail). Candidates must be successful on all test parts to be placed on the eligibility list.  The eligibility list created from this recruitment will be used to fill any vacancies that occur during the one year life of the eligibility list, including full-time and/or part-time, permanent and/or temporary positions.

Santa Monica College reserves the right to modify the stated test components and weights prior to the administration of any test.

Test Retake Policy
Based on the District’s hiring needs, we may administer multiple recruitments for this job classification (or a related job classification that uses the same test(s)) within the next several months. Candidates must wait a period of 90 calendar days between testing appointments before retesting. Candidates who are ineligible to participate in an upcoming test or interview due to the provided retake period will be notified via email, and will have their highest valid score(s) on any non-weighted (pass/fail) test parts applied toward that recruitment.

Examples of Duties

Receives, stores and issues supplies and solutions to students and faculty such as tints, lotions, rinses, shampoos, polishes, dyes, and disinfectants to faculty and students; prepares stock solutions such as permanent wave lotions, neutralizers, shampoos, rinses, and disinfectants.
 
Follows industry sanitation standards for health and safety; responds to audits; keeps up to date Safety Data Sheets for all products used in the department; provides state required allergy tests.
 
Requisitions supplies and equipment; assembles supplies for each new class; maintains continuous up to date stock inventory and orders new supplies; stocks and maintains supplies and equipment in orderly condition; maintains record of equipment tags, and supplies for each new class.
 
Receives, greets and directs patrons, students, and the public in a service-oriented environment; schedules appointments and maintains appointment records; answers telephones and takes messages; inputs data into a computer database; furnishes information concerning appointments and services offered.
 
Collects money from patrons for services performed and balances cash against cash register receipts each day; prepares and makes deposits.
 
Launders and restocks towels, sheets, gowns and smocks and maintains a clean and orderly salon, laboratory, stock room, dispensary and reception desk.
 
Enters data, maintains records and performs routine clerical work to support laboratory operations. 
 
Performs other related duties as requested or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education Requirement:
Graduation from High School or GED equivalent
 
Experience Requirement:
One year clerical, receptionist, or stockroom experience, including customer service experience with direct public contact. Experience in a cosmetology environment is desirable.
 
Licensure and/or Certification: 
Cosmetology License preferred.
