Primary Purpose:

Responsible for designing and coordinating the more complex electric system additions and modifications for electric transmission and distribution substation facilities. Participates in the preparation and conducts training programs for design/engineering personnel.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead the design of complex electric system projects such as those involving emerging telecommunication, security, and/or system protection/automation technologies (as applicable).
  • Participate with engineering staff groups in studies related to design, planning and construction of electric substation facilities.
  • Develop and maintain standards related to the electrical or structural design of substations.
  • This may include the development of electronic control and protection schemes.
  • Review the electrical or structural designs prepared by designers and engineers, equipment manufacturers and consultants to ensure compliance with building codes, regulatory agency requirements and company standards and specifications.
  • Confer with customers, contractors, consultants, manufacturers, architects, government representatives and intra-company departments regarding electric system additions or modifications.
  • Provide technical assistance and guidance to designers and engineers performing design work; participate and conduct training programs for design and engineering personnel.
  • May act as a technical mentor to review the work of others.
  • Meet with manufacturers and suppliers to evaluate and select equipment and construction materials for substation installations. Determine conductor ampacity on other related equipment.
  • Support the preparation of budgets, cost analysis and estimates, construction work orders and schedules for assigned projects, monitor costs to control project expenditures.
  • Coordinate others in the field investigation and preliminary studies for major projects to develop engineering and cost data, prepare the preliminary and final design drawing packages.
  • Keep the section informed of electrical and structural codes, safety regulations, and regulatory agency requirements affecting the design of electric substation facilities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned (no more than 5% of duties).

Hybrid Schedule:

  • Although the schedule may vary, typically this will allow the employee to work onsite three days per week and remotely on the remaining workdays.
  • Must reside in Southern California or be willing to relocate upon hire.

Required Qualifications

  • Knowledge of algebra, geometry, trigonometry, physics, electrical theory, use of computers, computer assisted drafting, and oral communication normally acquired through college level courses.
  • 7 years experience related to the design of electric substation facilities and a thorough knowledge of construction methods and electronic control and protection schemes.
  • Requires a thorough knowledge of substation design and construction activities.
  • Requires ability to apply extensive technical expertise and has full knowledge of other related disciplines.
  • Requires the understanding of complex control and protection schemes or structural systems (as applicable) developed by engineers
  • Ingenuity is required in designing unusual or technical components of projects.
  • Analytic ability is needed in the preparation of budgets, cost estimates and schedules; in evaluating and selecting equipment; and in reviewing and evaluating design work prepared by others.
  • Exercises independent judgment in arriving at decisions concerning design projects.
  • We offer a hybrid work environment. Although the schedule may vary, typically this will allow you to work from the office three days per week and work remotely on the remaining workdays.

  • Ingenuity is required in designing unusual or technical components of projects.
  • Analytic ability is needed in the preparation of budgets, cost estimates and schedules; in evaluating and selecting equipment; and in reviewing and evaluating design work prepared by others.
  • Exercises independent judgment in arriving at decisions concerning design projects.
