Primary Purpose:

The Sr. Resource Planner will support cross-functional teams on near and long-term resource planning analytics to further SDG&E's position as America's cleanest, safest, and most reliable energy company in America. The successful candidate will act as a project leader to perform energy modeling and data analysis on projects involving development of resource plans, cost/revenue forecasts, and the procurement of electric power to support SDG&E's clean energy and sustainability goals.
The incumbent will be expected to take a conceptual issue and independently design and complete analysis to develop meaningful conclusions that will help to directly inform internal decision making and policy regarding energy supply. The Sr. Resource Planner may act as a subject matter expert and may provide testimony or act as a witness in regulatory proceedings to support internal projects and teams throughout SDG&E. This is a technical and analysis focused role that will also contribute to business strategy and policy.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Act as a project leader to perform energy modeling and complex data analysis to support studies or projects involving resource planning, cost forecasting, and electric power procurement.
  • Develop generation and cost forecasts to support business goals, implementing new modeling or analytical techniques.
  • Provide leadership, technical expertise, training and guidance to others.
  • Work in direct consultation with middle and top management in decision making and business strategy.
  • Interface with regulators and legislators, act as regulatory witness or provide testimony if required, and represent SDG&E to external organizations or stakeholders.
  • Performs other duties as assigned (no more than 5% of duties).

Hybrid Schedule:

  • Although the schedule may vary, typically this will allow the employee to work onsite three days per week and remotely on the remaining workdays.
  • Must reside in Southern California or be willing to relocate upon hire.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in a quantitative or business field such as Engineering, Accounting, Finance, Economics, Business Administration, or a related field is required or equivalent training and/or experience.
  • 8 - 10 years - relevant work experience of increasingly challenging analytics.
  • Experience with battery energy storage modeling is required and PVSyst is highly desirable.
  • Experience with utility energy markets and analytics.
  • An understanding of the CPUC regulatory process as it pertains to commodity procurement and a familiarity with various forms of power contracting (such as tolling agreements) is required.
  • Advanced understanding of utility generation and commodities accounting or direct experience with the Energy Resource Recovery Account or Portfolio Allocation Balancing Account is highly desirable.
  • Ability to perform complex analysis and modeling. Able to anticipate requirements and can develop sound analytical approaches to emerging industry challenges such as energy storage or the modeling of preferred resources.
  • Effective in communicating complex energy / LCBF analytical results to all levels inside and outside the company.
  • Strong interpersonal skills. Able to persuade and influence those with divergent views to achieve a consensus.
  • May be required to work extended hours and travel as required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • CPA, MBA and/or other professional certification or an advanced degree is desired.
  • Successful commercial transaction dealings is desirable.
