BARBERING / COSMETOLOGY INSTRUCTOR

Job Description

Position Description
POSITION SUMMARY

This faculty position is a full-time, 100% FTE (10 Months) Tenure Track position as Instructor of Barbering/Cosmetology in the Division of Business & Workforce Development located at San Jose City College.

Assignment may include day and evening responsibilities.

This position is represented by the San Jose/Evergreen Federation of Teachers, AFT 6157.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Teach existing courses across the SJCC programs that prepare students for licensure by Board of Barbering & Cosmetology, including primarily the licensure as Cosmetologist as well as crossover programs for Hairstylist and Esthetician.

2. Lead creation and establishment of new curriculum and programs preparing student for licensure as Barber.

3. Technical Instruction and Practical Training in Shaving.

4. The subject of Preparation and Performance shall include, but is not limited to the following techniques and procedures: Preparing the client’s hair for shaving, assessing the condition of the client’s skin, performing shaving techniques, applying after-shave antiseptic following facial services, massaging the client’s face, rolling cream massages.

5. Teach courses in assigned discipline by communicating subject matter clearly and effectively.

6. Adapt methodologies for students with special needs and different learning styles.

7. Demonstrate commitment to professional development, including but not limited to activities such as: participation in professional conferences, workshops, seminars, membership in professional organizations, research projects, publishing academic work, participation in statewide committees or organizations, etc.

8. Demonstrate sensitivity in working with students and staff of diverse racial, ethnic, academic and socio economic backgrounds, sexual orientation, and disabilities by showing respect for differences and the dignity of others.

9. Participate in faculty responsibilities such as: course and curriculum development and review, student learning outcomes and assessment, program review, committees, research and special projects as needed in the discipline/department or district.

10. Attend and participate in department, division and college meetings and keep posted office hours.

11. Meet record keeping obligations on time, e.g. grades, census, reports, rosters, textbook orders, and requisitions.

12. Maintain and provide current course syllabi as required by California Education Code and Board policy.

13. Foster a professional work and learning environment.

14. Perform other duties as required by the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Required Qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

1. Any Bachelor’s degree or higher and two years of professional experience related to the discipline

OR

Any Associate’s degree and six years of professional experience related to the discipline

AND

2. Current and active licensure with the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology.

    Foreign Degree
    Foreign Degrees:

    Degree(s) must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Council on Post-Secondary Accreditation and/or the U.S. Department of Education.

    All degrees and credits earned outside of the United States must have a U.S. evaluation (course by course) of the transcripts and must be submitted with the application.

    Degrees earned outside of the U.S. without a U.S. credential evaluation attached, will not be considered.
    Desired Qualifications
    Desired Qualifications:

    1. Barber Training: Experience as licensed Barber and Barbering Instructor.

    2. Service to Students: Experience teaching or coordinating learning for community college and other adult students.

    3. Service to Clients: Three years documented experience in Barbering/Cosmetology industry.

    4. Planning and Organization: Demonstrated success coordinating large scale learning activities, client services, and/or community service related to Barbering and Cosmetology.

    6. Industry Engagement: Demonstrated success effectively collaborating with and partnering with Barbering and Cosmetology professionals to produces program/service enhancements.

    7. Bilingual abilities, desirable.
