The Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking a junior Biomaterials Scientist.

The Applied Biological Sciences Group (QLA), located within the Asymmetric Operations Sector (AOS), is committed to APL's mission to provide critical contributions to critical challenges. We are seeking an early career materials scientist to contribute to a variety of research, development, and characterization projects in biomaterials science that will help understand and mitigate the impacts of emerging biological threats. As a Junior Materials/Biomaterials Scientist, you will:

  • Conduct basic and applied research to better understand the impacts of nanoparticle exposures on human health.
  • Synthesize organic and inorganic nanoparticles and assist in the development of novel formulations or synthesis methods.
  • Collaborate closely with experienced chemists and biologists, performing experiments in support of a diverse set of research areas (biodefense, healthcare, etc.).
  • Receive mentorship from subject matter experts and grow your capabilities in the laboratory.
  • Demonstrate technical expertise through designing and performing experiments, analyzing data, writing technical reports and publications.
  • Publish and present findings to our sponsors and the broader scientific community.

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

  • Possess a bachelor’s degree in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Biological or Chemical Engineering, or a related field
  • 1 year of experience working with organic or inorganic nanoparticles.
  • Experience with laboratory measurements of biomaterials properties and performance.
  • Experience with nanoparticle synthesis and characterization.
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills. Strong hands-on laboratory skills. The ability to manage multiple simultaneous assignments and changing priorities.
  • Methodical, meticulous work practices and excellent interpersonal, logical reasoning, and organizational skills.
  • The ability to work collaboratively in a diverse team environment with scientists and engineers representing different backgrounds, skills, and experience levels.
  • The desire to work in both BSL2 and Chemical laboratory environments.
  • Are able to obtain a Secret security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you...

  • Experience working with molecular assays and 2D/3D in vitro models to characterize cellular response to nanoparticle stimuli.
  • Strong background in micro- and molecular-biology laboratory techniques.
  • The ability to write clearly.
