Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
Student Affairs provides essential programs and services that encourage and support academic success and personal growth for more than 29,500 students enrolled in undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs at the University. These programs and services challenge and enable students to become compassionate and responsible citizens and leaders on the campus and in local and global communities through an inclusive, culturally diverse and growth-centered campus environment. Student Affairs includes 17 departments, more than 325 full- and part-time professionals, and over 800 student workers who work together daily with campus administrators, faculty, and students to foster an environment of student learning and success.

Position Summary
This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.

The Human Resources (HR) Specialist position provides professional consultation in human resources best practices that support the organization in achieving stated business and strategic goals and objectives. The HR Specialist functions as a generalist covering the broad range of human resources subject matter areas including classification and compensation, recruitment and hiring, performance management, wage hour and leave administration, and benefits. Work involves developing and maintaining productive collaborative work relationships while assessing and responding to apparent and underlying client needs. Must interpret policies and practices in context of the client’s needs and in alignment with the organizations best interests and advise clients accordingly. Confidentiality is an essential expectation of the position. This position requires a high level of technical knowledge and critical thinking. The role requires an excellent communicator with firm behaviors for legal compliance and the ability to establish strong professional relationships with a diverse population, to include campus partners.

The primary areas of responsibility for this position include Carolina Housing, New Student and Family Programs (NSFP), Carolina Union (CU), and Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL).

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
  • The position requires the ability to follow guidelines, regulations, and policies and the ability to interpret and explain complex policies and procedures in a clear and consistent manner to diverse audiences.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential.
  • High level of detail and organization, professionalism and discretion, excellent customer service skills, and an ability to adapt easily, follow through, complete tasks, and resolve issues.
  • Must have the ability to maintain records with great accuracy and detail.
  • Must have the ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships and handle work in a highly professional and confidential manner.
  • Must have a customer service-focused approach to problem-solving
  • Must possess excellent computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Office products and the ability to work independently on multiple HR-related functions.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
  • Previous work experience in a college/university environment.
  • Experience with human resources systems (e.g., time management system, applicant tracking system, employment eligibility verification, and human resources information system).
  • Familiarity with a shared services model.

Campus Security Authority Responsibilities

This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities.
