Job Description:

Basic Function and Responsibility:

Under the general oversight of the Dean of Health Careers and the general management and supervision of the Department Chair, and Senior Health Career Specialist the Health Career Specialist provides an array of services and assistance to promote personal growth and informed educational and career planning and decision-making. In addition to advising responsibilities, the incumbent identifies, coordinates, and implements outcomes and data-driven efforts to support health career program student success goals.

 

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide academic advising focused on helping prospective, new, continuing, and returning students with an exploration of their academic and career objectives. Ensure students are provided consistent, accurate, and prompt advising services. Troubleshoot student issues, concerns, and complaints.
  • Oversee and communicate to students entering the limited enrollment Health Career Programs, the admission and enrollment process.
  • Participate in the development, planning, promotion, and delivery of recruiting, marketing, advising, registration, and transition workshops and events for prospective, newly admitted, and current students that include helping provide direction to the department and assisting in the development of programs that support student academic planning and student success interventions.
  • Participate in advising and/or student success initiative meetings hosted by the Office of Advising, Transitions, and Student Success.
  • Develop, evaluate, and facilitate Information Sessions for health career programs and provide information to prospective students regarding applications, admissions, and program requirements, including collaboration with Recruitment and Outreach Specialists.
  • Provide academic advising to prospective, current, transfer, and returning students, including educational planning, SOAP interventions, registration, transfer, and matriculation issues. Including providing wrap-around supportive interventions in compliance with grant requirements, including referrals to internal and external academic, financial, and personal support resources.
  • Answer questions about health career program policies, procedures, and programs of study and support services provided by the College and direct students to the appropriate office/personnel. Including collaborating with the department chairs regarding student needs, support, academic planning, and student success interventions for current programs and developing programs.
  • Work collaboratively to coordinate services and provide student-centered admission and advising from new student enrollment to credential completion.
  • Provide career decision-making support, including using online resources to access relevant information to assist students in creating informed goals and action plans.
  • Collaborate with Enrollment Services to create and maintain admissions and communications flow/calendar and monitor adherence to timelines and TargetX admissions communications, including application status emails and decision emails. Partner with relevant departments in the development of communication flows.
  • Create and conduct presentations for recruitment activities targeted at special populations while working with internal departments, external community partners, and stakeholders to develop referral partnerships, recruit students, participate in events, and bolster program enrollment.
  • Log phone calls and track prospective, current, and graduated health career program students.
  • Maintain student and other records as required. Collect, compile, and prepare statistical data and sensitive information for reports, contracts, publications, etc., requiring information and knowledge of college operations and activities.

Job Requirements:


Qualifications and Working Conditions:

  • Master's degree is required, preferably in college student personnel work, counseling, adult continuing education, social work or related field.
  • One or more years of successful advising and/or counseling experience, preferably in a college setting, is necessary.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including the ability to develop and conduct presentations for a variety of student audiences, are required.
  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills. Demonstrated ability to plan, coordinate, prioritize, and effectively execute multiple initiatives, programs, and events and meet established deadlines.
  • Ability to analyze situations, identify solutions, present recommendations, and anticipate issues and consequences of decisions and actions.
  • Ability to work flexible hours including some evening and weekend hours consistent with student need is necessary.
  • Ability to read and accurately interpret academic and career advising information is necessary, including ability to articulate accurately credit equivalency database, transfer guides, articulation agreements and General Education requirements to prospective students. Additionally, knowledge of Appalachian majors/minors, is preferable.
  • Ability to integrate college-based, Internet, and other computer-based information resources and recruitment/retention software into the advising process is necessary. Experience with Banner and TargetX/Salesforce is preferred.
  • Ability to utilize a keyboard to enter, maintain and manipulate data on a computer is required.
  • Ability to interact professionally and tactfully with people of different levels of education, cultural backgrounds, and life experiences, and to exhibit an adequate level of respect to fellow employees and the College community at large.

Physical Demands:

Light lifting up to 25 lbs. and light carrying up to 25 lbs. Ability to reach above shoulder. Periods of time spent sitting, standing, walking, kneeling, bending and stooping. Mobility to move from building to building on-Campus and to visit off-Campus entities. Work is performed in a general office environment and is sedentary in nature. Little or no exposure to adverse working conditions.

Supervision Received:

Administrative supervision is received from the Dean of Health Careers. Functional supervision is received from the department chair and Senior Health Career Specialist.

Supervision Exercised:

None.

HOURS- Monday - Friday 8:30 am - 5:15 pm

SALARY: $58,295

This is a temporary grant position and continued employment, is based on the successful renewal of the grant.

Based on the needs of the college and with Administrator approval, some positions at the college may have hybrid schedule options available after 30 working days.
