Job Description

The Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara University invites applications for an open rank tenure line position in Christian Spirituality. Areas of sub-specialization are open but may include History of Spirituality, Ignatian Spirituality, Spirituality and Scripture, Spirituality and Ministry, and Latino/a Spirituality. Applicants should have a firm grounding in the academic discipline of Christian Spirituality with facility in articulating various methodologies, including theological, historical, and hermeneutic, as well as their own approach to the discipline. Particular attention will be given to candidates attentive to interdisciplinary, interreligious, and intercultural context. Candidates must demonstrate promise/success as a teaching scholar and understand and support the school's Catholic and Jesuit mission.

Located in Berkeley, CA, JST-SCU is an international center of scholarly and ministerial formation. The faculty and student body are comprised of lay men and women, Jesuits, clergy, and members of other religious orders. Faculty at JST-SCU are teaching scholars who balance a commitment to quality teaching with active programs of research and creative scholarship. Ideal candidates should demonstrate not only potential for excellent graduate teaching, but also promise in sustained research and scholarly publication, and service to JST-SCU, the GTU, the broader community, and the Church. The successful candidate will mentor students in JST-SCU's ecclesiastical programs (STL and STD) as well as our various master's degrees and GTU programs.

Qualifications

Completion of the Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Christian Spirituality or a closely related field. Evidence of effective and excellent teaching. Experience mentoring/directing graduate work is desirable. Evidence of a strong research agenda and publication record in the area of expertise.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will:

• Teach four graduate courses per year on the semester system. These courses will serve JST-SCU's and GTU's diverse student body and programmatic needs.
• Direct and contribute to comprehensive exam, thesis, and dissertation committees.
• Further a research agenda that leads to peer-reviewed publications.
• Provide service to the school as appropriate to rank.
• Have or be willing to develop expertise in rigorous and engaging online education.
