Protective Services Officer (Part Time)

Job Description

SUMMARY:
Under the direction of supervision, performs physical security, safety monitoring and minor maintenance duties.

This position will work no more than 80 hours per calendar month on a schedule that involves varying days and hours.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Ensures the campus community is provided high quality physical security services to protect people and property
• Provides support to other college departments in support of college operations
• Is knowledgeable of College guidelines, regulations and policies
• Enforces college regulations and policies in a fair and consistent manner
• Builds and maintains effective professional relationships with students, employees and the general public
• Monitors activities schedules and become familiar with campus programs and services
• Provides information and assistance to the campus community upon request.
• Admits or denies access to campus facilities and equipment as necessary
• Secures campus equipment and facilities utilizing proper access control guidelines; monitors the facilities and grounds for safety and security risks
• Patrols the campus regularly on foot or by vehicle as assigned
• Communicates information using two-way radio, phone and computer software; responds to calls for service
• Investigates suspicious activities and takes necessary action as deemed appropriate utilizing approved methods and standards
• Reports problems of an emergency nature to the local emergency services and proper campus administrators as necessary
• Coordinates with campus administrators and emergency services in response to emergencies
• Is knowledgeable of College emergency management procedures and has an awareness level of the principles of the National Incident Management System
• Assists Physical Resources staff in monitoring mechanical, access control and safety equipment to assure proper working order
• Monitors and responds to alarms associated with fire detection, access control and surveillance systems
• Prepares work order requests and makes calls for emergency repairs as necessary
• Performs light maintenance duties on a limited basis such as minor mechanical repairs, janitorial duties and snow removal; utilizes hand tools, preforms preventative vehicle maintenance and operate small tractors or trucks for snow removal
• Monitors WWCC parking lots for compliance with posted parking restrictions; issues warning tickets for unauthorized or unsafe parking as necessary
• Keeps notes of important shift activities and incidents and communicates information effectively verbally and in written form
• Documents incidents using appropriate computer software or handwritten reports as necessary
• Remains flexible to the changing environment adapting to different situations
• Seeks out work related education opportunities and participates in all required employee training programs

• Maintains a professional appearance and wears approved uniform as directed by the Protective Services Supervisor

• Performs other duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
The requirements listed below are representative the knowledge, skills and abilities required to satisfactorily perform the essential duties and responsibilities.

Required:
Possess a high school diploma or G.E.D.
To be age 21 at the time of hire as required by local ordinance and state law to effectively enforce College policy in regarding alcoholic beverages on College property.
Pass a pre-employment physical
Pass a pre-employment background check
Possess a valid driver’s license
Maintain an acceptable driving record in compliance with College’s requirements

Knowledge of:
Basic principles and practices of security and safety operations
Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office Programs, e.g. Word, Excel, etc.

Ability to:
Demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication skills
Manage typical and crisis situations efficiently and effectively
Communicate effectively verbally and in writing
Understand principles and practices of PC’s and related software
Work in inside or outside in changing weather conditions
Handle small hand tools and to perform light maintenance duties
Work with minimal supervision


EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
Any combination of education and experience that demonstrates possession of the requisite knowledge, skill and abilities. A typical way to obtain these would be:

One (1) to Two (2) years of post high school training in security or emergency services operations

One (1) to Two (2) years of previous position-specific work experience at a public institution

Equivalency Statement
For those who do not exactly meet all the minimum qualifications, an equivalent combination of education and experience which has provided comparable knowledge and abilities may be acceptable.
