Position Summary:

If so, the Department of Economics & Finance invites you to apply for a tenure-track position in finance at the assistant professor level beginning August 16, 2024.

The Department of Economics & Finance is in the School of Business Administration. The department offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees in finance. Finance is one of the largest undergraduate majors on campus and our students regularly place at leading firms in the finance industry. The department also houses two centers. The Davis Center for Portfolio Management is home to the $60 million Flyer Investments Fund, the largest student-managed portfolio in the country. The Hanley Center for ESG Investing is one of a small number of undergraduate centers that gives students hands-on experience with applying ESG criteria to a student-managed portfolio.

Our faculty have an active research culture. Current faculty have publications in top outlets such as the Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial Economics, Review of Financial Studies, Journal of Financial & Quantitative Analysis, Management Science, Journal of Financial Markets, Journal of Financial Intermediation, Financial Management, Journal of Corporate Finance, Journal of Empirical Finance, and the Journal of Banking & Finance. The University of Dayton subscribes to WRDS, in addition to numerous data providers such as CRSP, CompuStat, Refinitiv, Bloomberg, and FactSet.

New faculty will teach courses in the undergraduate program, and potentially in the Masters of Finance program. A new assistant professor typically teaches a four-course load per year and receives summer research support for two years. Other responsibilities include service to the department, School, University, and/or profession, and collaborative engagement with colleagues.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • A.B.D. and nearing completion of a Ph.D. or D.B.A. in finance, financial economics, or related field from an AACSB or comparably accredited program;
  • Potential to conduct high quality research;
  • Potential to teach effectively.

Preferred Qualifications:

While not everyone may meet all preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:

  • Completed Ph.D. or D.B.A. in finance, financial economics, or related field from an AACSB or comparably accredited program;
  • Demonstrated high quality research agenda;
  • Sensitivity to Catholic and Marianist educational values, for example, the commitment to the common good, building inclusive communities, educating the whole person, and integrating learning and scholarship (see more information on the themes of our Marianist identity here);
  • Successful experience in one or more of the following:
  • Instructor of record at the university level at an AACSB or comparable institution;
  • The Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) program;
  • Teaching and/or mentoring students from socially and culturally diverse backgrounds;
  • Teaching in an online or hybrid environment.
  • Demonstrated professionalism and collaboration within the profession;
  • Effective oral communication skills;
  • Effective interpersonal communication skills;
  • Technical skills that would add to the range of skills in the department.

  • A curriculum vitae/resume that includes a detailed record of professional and teaching experience;
  • A Statement of Teaching Experience and Philosophy that describes how the applicant's professional and/or prior teaching experience would inform their teaching;
  • Evidence of Teaching Effectiveness (e.g., teaching evaluations and syllabi);
  • A Statement of Research that describes the candidates research agenda, the publication status on current work, and if applicable, current progress towards defending their dissertation;
