The Department of History seeks to appoint a Lecturer (Education and Research) in Early Modern British History, tenable for 12 months full-time from 1 January 2024. The post will meet temporary teaching needs arising from a colleague’s maternity leave. 

The post-holder will specialize in any part of the period 1500-1800. Their responsibilities will include teaching the first year module Historical Skills, Sources and Approaches, the second year Themes in Premodern British History, and final year Crime and Punishment, as well as contributing to the first year survey module, Early Modern Worlds. They will conduct research in early modern British history, and be expected to contribute to the administration and pastoral provision of the Department of History, and may be asked to contribute to the King’s Past project, which investigates the history of King’s College London in relation to national and global structures of power.

Applications are welcome from candidates with expertise in Early Modern British History and the ability to teach the modules outlined above. Candidates should have completed a PhD by the date of appointment.

This post will be offered on a fixed-term contract for 12 months until December 2024

This is a full-time post – 100% full time equivalent

 

Key responsibilities

•         Deliver team-taught and specialized teaching at UG level  

•         Contribute to administrative and pastoral provision in the Department of History 

•         Engage in scholarship on Early Modern History

Skills, knowledge, and experience 

 

Essential criteria

  1. PhD in Early British Modern History completed 
  2. Excellent research in Early Modern British History 
  3. Demonstrable ability to convene, teach and assess modules relating to Early Modern British History across the undergraduate curriculum 
  4. Demonstrable ability to engage students and support their learning 
  5. Demonstrable administrative and interpersonal skills, a collaborative ethos, and capacity for team-working 
  6. Strong track record in scholarship relative to career stage 
  7. Experience of teaching and supporting students at UG level 
  8. Ability to teach the modules listed in the role profile 

 

Desirable criteria

  1. Experience of teaching and supporting students at PG level 
  2. Experience of researching a public-facing, institutional history project relevant to working on King’s past
