About the Department

The College of Engineering at NC State University created in the late 1980’s distance education programs to serve the educational needs of the citizens of North Carolina working as practicing engineers and computer scientists in the region. The Office of Distance Engineering Education, known as Engineering Online, is responsible for the coordination of synchronous and asynchronous classes, registration of online students, handling student issues regarding course delivery, and student services, marketing of programs, and working with faculty in the development and delivery of classes. The majority of online students are professional engineers or computer scientists working full-time. Student services, quality delivery of online courses, and good communication are vital to the success of online students.

Essential Job Duties

The Engineering Online Program Specialist will be responsible for creating marketing plans using media and digital communications, participating in on-site events such as exhibits at conferences and at business sites, developing print and display materials, and creating new ideas for the Engineering Online (EOL) website. This position will work closely with the College of Engineering departments in the development of information about their degree programs for placement on digital ads, print ads, and brochures, work with the College’s communication office in the design and printing of materials for conference and ads and work with the EOL webmaster on related issues ensuring that information about the various EOL programs is updated.

The Engineering Online Program Specialist will also represent the College of Engineering at various events throughout the year and be responsible for all logistics of conference exhibits. This position will coordinate with other NC State faculty and staff assisting with the conference booths and sharing information about the conference with attendees who are requesting more information about various programs with the engineering departments.

Engineering Online offers distance courses for two site-based bachelor’s degrees for undergraduates attending partner institutions: Mechanical Engineering Systems in Havelock, N.C., and Mechatronics in Asheville, N.C. Not only will this position plan strategies for the graduate programs and certificates, this position will also be responsible for working with the site-based BSE and 2+2 programs helping them to market their programs.

Travel will be necessary during the peak conference months often scheduled in late September, October, early November, and February through April.

This position will also be responsible for presenting a budget to the Director each year including funds requested for travel to special events.

Other Responsibilities

Additional duties as assigned by the EOL Director or requested by the Associate Dean for Graduate Programs.

Minimum Experience/Education

Bachelor’s degree and one year of experience related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
 
All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

  • A highly motivated self-starter able to work independently as well as in a team environment
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills and the ability to effectively communicate to a dynamic population
  • Proficient in MS Office applications: Word, Excel, Word Press, Publisher, PowerPoint, and Adobe Creative Suite 6 (or similar software)
  • Strong multi-tasking, prioritization, and organizational skills
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and discretion in problem-solving
  • Ability and willingness to adapt to work schedule changes
  • Ability to work quickly with acute attention to detail when under pressure
  • Must be able to travel to program events throughout the year

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree from an accredited college in marketing or related area
  • Significant promotional and event coordination work experience
  • Familiar with NC State University and branding principles
