Job Description
Great Basin College (GBC) seeks engaged, collaborative candidates for the Director of Communications, this position is located at the Elko Campus and reports to the Vice President of Student and Academic Affairs or assigned administrator. The Director of Communications plans, organizes, orchestrates, and evaluates a variety of activities in order to develop and maintain a strong and positive public image for the College. The Director presents the College to the community at large through the development and maintenance of relationships with K-12 partners, elected officials, corporations, and/or other targeted entities. Incumbent in this position develops marketing, advertising, including written communication materials for website, social media, and College publications to advance the College’s goals at the local, state, and national level.
 
 
 
Qualifications
 
  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in a related field including marketing, communications, or education.
  • At least five years previous experience related to marketing and public relations.
  • Two years of supervisory experiences.
  • Demonstrated understanding of social media channels including Facebook, Twitter (X), Instagram, LinkedIn, and YouTube.
  • Demonstrated experience working with groups of diverse backgrounds in terms including ethnicities, gender identity, sexual orientation, cultural, academic, socioeconomic, and disabilities.
 
 
Responsibilities
 
  • Plan, implement, and coordinate the College’s marketing, advertising, and public relations programs to advance the goals and mission of the College.
  • Coordinate and supervise all communications staff and media relations for the College to ensure accurate and timely coverage of the College’s events and news, utilizing newspaper, radio, television, and social media; serve as lead media spokesperson for the College; represent and act on the President’s behalf to the media when appropriate.
  • Write press releases, articles, announcements, profiles and stories highlighting students and programs that support college and campus communications and meet the College’s outreach efforts.
  • Provides counsel to administration, faculty and staff regarding current and potential public relations, community relations, and marketing and communication issues.
  • Coordinate and direct all college marketing and community activities to best represent the College to a variety of audiences in an effort to maintain and/or increase student enrollment.
  • Plan, coordinate and direct selected special events or tours that attract media coverage and attendance of key groups such as elected officials, corporate leaders, K-12 leaders and community-based organizations.
  • Monitor issues, trends and events in the community, predict consequences and advise administration on planned programs of action.
  • Establish, nurture, and maintain positive external relationships with individuals, businesses, elected officials and community-based organizations that support the College’s outreach efforts.
  • Direct and oversee the design and structure of the College website; review and approve all web related promotional products.
  • Demonstrate creativity and big-picture thinking to coordinate and develop social media content and daily maintenance.
  • Develops brand marketing strategies and monitors the performance of those strategies.
  • Arrange for interviews with staff for print and broadcast media and for special events.
  • Directs the photography and video needs and other relevant activities for special College events.
  • Participate and lead the creation and implementation of a strategic plan for communications area of the College.
  • Prepare comprehensive reports, including researching, compiling and analyzing data for special projects and reports, provide information and assistance to members of the general public, the media and other institutions and organizations.
  • Develop and administer the annual budget for the department; analyze and review budgetary and financial data; control and authorize expenditures in accordance with established resources and limitations.
  • Participate on college, NSHE, and other committees as appropriate.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
 
 
Travel
The position may require driving to other GBC campuses, with or without reasonable accommodation as per the Americans with Disabilities Act, with possible overnight stays to coordinate students and programs throughout the service area. There must be a commitment to the GBC mission to serve rural Nevada. The successful candidate will participate in several state-wide or national meetings each year that require overnight travel.
 
 
Compensation Grade
Administrative Faculty – D
 
The budgeted salary range for this position is $75,600 - $86,000
Salary is based on relatable education and experience, internal equity and budgets.

Grants-in-aid for Faculty Employees
Great Basin College is proud to provide a reduced-rate tuition benefit to faculty and qualified dependents. Faculty can take up to six credits per semester at a reduced rate. Dependents of faculty have unlimited credits, but in order to be eligible children must be unmarried and under the age of 24 and must receive at least 50% of their financial support from the employee and/or employee’s spouse or domestic partner.

Newly hired faculty must assure that their official transcripts are sent by the degree granting institution(s) to Great Basin College Human Resources Office within 30 days from the effective date of employment. Regionally accredited institutions must have awarded academic degrees.
 
If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
