The laboratory of Dr. Bethea is in search of a highly motivated Research Scientist. The Bethea laboratory works on neuroimmune mechanisms of CNS injury and repair with the ultimate goal of developing new therapies for chronic pain and other neurodegenerative disorders. The Research Scientist will work with our team in both post-operative and osteoarthritis models or acute and chronic pain. They will be responsible for establishing these models in the lab and leading independent studies analyzing mechanisms of action for therapeutic targets.
This position is responsible for planning, conducting and supervising research at a high level, by designing and conducting experiments in a controlled laboratory setting. Using extensive experience and judgment, this role will plan independent research, analyze and interpret data, publish results, represent the university at conferences and meetings, develop new theories and methodologies, and will lead and direct the work of lower-level research staff, while transferring technical expertise.
Responsibilities/expectations include but are not limited to:
  • Establishing both post-operative and osteoarthritic models
  • Training graduate students
  • Maintaining transgenic mouse lines critical to experiments
  • Assisting other lab members if time/expertise allows
  • Performing behavioral/molecular/biochemical assays independently (including and not limited to: von Frey, Hargreaves, acetone testing, RNAseq, immunohistochemistry)
  • Writing manuscripts and independent research grants

Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a Master’s degree plus 5 years of experience or a PhD plus 2 years of experience in a related discipline to include at least 2 years of research and/or college level teaching in a field basic to the work to be performed. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position.

Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications:
Preferred Qualifications:
  • 3 years of postdoctoral experience is desired
  • Proficiency with behavioral, molecular, and biochemical techniques desired
  • 3 years experience with acute and or chronic pain models is desired
  • Strong publication record in the field of pain neuroscience, immunology, and or neuroimmunology preferred
  • Ability to communicate information and ideas effectively
Typical Hiring Range Commensurate with Experience.
