Job Description

Applicants are sought for a postdoctoral researcher or senior postdoctoral position at Louisiana State University to work in the area of multimessenger astrophysics. The researcher will work in Professor Michela Negro’s dynamic group, whose focus ranges among time-domain astronomy, polarization studies from astrophysical sources, machine learning applications to data analysis and reconstruction, development of future high-energy space-based missions, software and theoretical development to support these efforts. We anticipate this position will be a 2-year appointment with the possibility of continuing for an additional year depending on availability of funding.

Responsibilities: Conduct data analysis and interpretation, utilizing both phenomenological and physical modeling, of steady or transient astrophysical sources and/or source populations. This can be achieved through theory and/or simulation advancement, multi-mission data analysis and multi-diagnostic studies. Additional responsibilities include data analysis and reconstruction through deep learning techniques and comparison with standard methods (80%). Learn how to write and submit competitive scientific proposals asking for either or both fundings and observational telescope time. Preparing articles and reports and present results in scientific meetings; assist with mentoring undergraduate and graduate students in research projects (20%).

National and international travel may be required. Collaborations with other groups in the Physics and Astronomy department at LSU is welcome, envisioned and encouraged. The senior postdoctoral researcher will be expected to lead data analysis, write and submit competitive scientific proposals and mentor students.

Minimum qualifications: (Both) Ph.D. in physics and/or astrophyiscs or related field with experience in elated fields (e.g., astronomy, gravitation, space environment); solid experience with coding/scripting. (Senior level) 3 years of related experience.

Preferred qualifications: Applicants should detail relevant experience in software development, machine learning techniques, multimessenger science, polarization modeling and simulations, time-domain studies, transient reporting, and interdisciplinary analysis.

Special Instructions: Please attach ALL documents under the Resume/CV section of your application. Provide a cover letter, CV, statement of research interest and three professional references including name, title, phone number and e-mail address. Official transcripts are required prior to hire.
