I. DEPARTMENT INFORMATION

Job Description Summary:
The Department of Environmental & Occupational Health is seeking one highly motivated postdoctoral scientist to join the Air, Climate, and Health Lab . The lab’s main interests are quantifying health impacts of air pollution and climate change from local to global scales using satellite data and model simulations, including developing scientific methods and evaluating policy scenarios for mitigation. This research is interdisciplinary and draws from a variety of fields, including atmospheric science, chemistry, and public health.
The successful candidate will work on the NASA-funded project “Assessing environmental justice, air quality, and health co-benefits of transport interventions in U.S. urban areas” with Senior Research Scientist Gaige Kerr . The successful candidate will be involved in all aspects of research including performing computer-based modeling work, quantifying public health and environmental justice benefits of air pollution mitigation strategies, engaging community-based organizations to help shape research and disseminate results, and preparing manuscripts and presentations. In conjunction with Dr. Kerr, other department investigators, and outside collaborators, the individual will identify additional research opportunities and prepare proposals for new extramural funding. This position performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
The individual will also receive mentoring and direct guidance from Dr. Kerr, Professor Susan Anenberg , and Assistant Research Professor Daniel Goldberg to advance their career in academic research, public health practice, and/or public policy.
Applicants should submit a curriculum vitae, a cover letter including career goals, and contact information for two references. GW values diversity, equity, and inclusion and recognizes that a workforce with diverse backgrounds and experiences is essential to combat public health and environmental crises. We encourage applicants of all identities and particularly those from historically excluded groups to apply for this opportunity.
Appointment Start: Winter 2023 – Spring 2024.
Appointment Length: The initial appointment will be for one year but may be extended for an additional 1-2 years depending on successful performance and sufficient funding.
Minimum Qualifications:
Qualified candidates will hold a Doctoral degree or comparable doctoral degree in a related discipline. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position.
Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications:
Preferred Qualifications:
  • A Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science, Public Health, Chemistry, Environmental Science/Engineering, or equivalent field by the time of appointment.
  • Expertise in Python, R, MATLAB, or a similar programming language.
  • Ability to create publication-quality figures, charts, and tables for high-impact dissemination.
  • Excellent data analysis and statistical skills.
  • Exceptional attention to detail in verbal and written communication.
  • Experience running and analyzing output from chemical transport models such as CAMx, WRF-Chem, GMI, GEOS-Chem, or others.
  • Experience with community-based participatory research and/or communication and translation of environmental and climate concepts to non-experts.
  • Ability to analyze satellite remote sensing and demographic datasets.
  • Familiarity conducting health impact assessments.
Typical Hiring Range Commensurate with Experience.
