Applications are invited for a Lecturer in Pure Mathematics in the Department of Mathematics at King’s College London. This is part of a continued strategic expansion of Mathematics at King’s. 

Candidates are expected to have a PhD in Mathematics or a closely related area, and will lead a programme of research in some area of Pure Mathematics (broadly interpreted). We are particularly encouraging applications from candidates with expertise in Mathematical Analysis and/or Probability Theory. They should be able to contribute to the development of teaching in mathematics at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.   

Candidates should have the potential to carry out research which has high levels of originality, innovation and depth that may lead to significant impact on their field in the long term.

The post is available from 1st January 2024 and is located at the Strand Campus of King’s College London.

This post will be offered on an indefinite contract. 

This is a full-time post - 100% full time equivalent

Key responsibilities

As a Lecturer in Pure Mathematics, you will strengthen the reputation, culture and ambitions of the department and wider institution by:   

  • Leading a self-directed programme of research and scholarship at a level commensurate with the current international standards of excellence within the department 
  • Demonstrating a proven ability or potential for achieving research excellence in an area that fits in to one of our research groups, centres or interest groups 
  • Promoting the reputation of your research group through scientific meetings, scholarship, and other externally facing activities 
  • Delivering an excellent student experience through innovative teaching and assessment methods for both undergraduate and postgraduate taught programmes, in core mathematics and an area of pure mathematics 
  • Providing supervision to postgraduate research students 
  • Enthusiastically contributing to academic management and supporting the administration and organisation of the department to further its education, research activities and ambitions 
  • Being responsible for the wellbeing and pastoral care of students, including acting as Personal Tutor 
  • Engaging with and contributing to department, faculty and institutional level initiatives in accordance with education strategy at all levels of the organisation

Skills, knowledge, and experience 

Essential Criteria

  1. PhD in Mathematics or equivalent  
  2. Strong research record in any area of Pure Mathematics, as evidenced by publications in high quality journals and conferences  
  3. In-depth knowledge in an area of Pure Mathematics 
  4. Potential to attract external research funds  
  5. Ability to teach undergraduate and postgraduate modules in mathematics 
  6. Ability to supervise postgraduate research students 
  7. Ability to make significant contribution to administrative work 
  8. Excellent oral and written communication skills, with an excellent standard of English language 
  9. A desire and vision to advance research development

  2. Experience of teaching and examining 
  3. Experience of administratio
