Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Behavior Technician. The Behavior Technician for the Intensive Outpatient Clinic (IOC) at the Rutgers Center for Adult Autism Services (RCAAS) implements a variety of behavior analytic strategies in support of successful outcomes for adults with autism across the areas of problem behavior reduction and skill acquisition goals throughout center-based and community-based environments.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Collects, interprets, and analyzes behavioral data, as well as assists in the management of severe problem behavior.
  • Contributes to the development of behavior analytic problem behavior reduction protocols and instructional programming under the supervision of a behavior analyst.
  • Provides direct supervision to adults with autism with limited direct supervision in a variety of settings and contexts (e.g., community, vocational, recreational, transportation, center-based, etc.)
  • Maintains an efficient and organized instructional environment across center-based and community-based settings.
  • Operates professionally in community-based environments with minimal supervision.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Applied Behavior Analysis, Special Education, or related field.
Certifications/Licenses
  • Current certification as a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT).
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to work well with adults with autism that have significant adaptive, physical, and/or behavioral support needs across various center-based and community-based settings.
  • Competent communication skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of applied behavior analysis (ABA) evidenced by current certification as a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT).
Preferred Qualifications
  • At least 6 months of prior experience supporting individuals with developmental disabilities in an ABA setting.
  • Experience working in settings supporting adults with autism.
  • Prior experience/certification in crisis management.
  • Prior experience using web-based data collection/analysis software.
  • Fluency with Microsoft Office Suite.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • The RCAAS IOC Behavior Technician is expected to provide direct care to adult patients in severe behavioral crisis and work with a team in providing treatment to patients in behavioral crisis. The RCAAS IOC Behavior Technician may work with patients with multiple forms of severe challenging behavior including, but not limited to, intense aggression, self-injury, elopement, expulsion (spitting out food or liquids during treatment), or property destruction. The Behavior Technician must have active certification in the implementation of crisis management techniques or be capable of obtaining certification in crisis management.
  • The Behavior Technician must be able to move, list, and carry patients and objects.
  • Moving, lifting, or transferring of patients may involve independently lifting up to fifty (50) pounds, as well as assisting with weights of more than one hundred (100) pounds. This requires the use of abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue.
  • This position requires frequent movement, use of limbs, and good manual dexterity, coordination, and stamina.
  • This position may also require extended periods of standing or sitting.
Special Conditions
  • The RBT credential requires applicants to meet minimum age and education standards, obtain 40 hours of acceptable training, successfully complete a competency assessment, take and pass the RBT written examination, and complete a criminal background check.
