Job Description

Post-Doctoral Research Associate - Department of Biosystems Engineering & Soil Science (UTIA) - 23000002A9

Description

Post-Doctoral Research Associate in C Sequestration & Pasture Management
The Department of Biosystems Engineering and Soil Science at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville has an opening for a postdoctoral researcher with expertise in soil science and micrometeorology.
The postdoctoral researcher will investigate real-time carbon sequestration potential of various warm and cool season grasses and intensity of grazing management. The carbon emission and sequestration will be monitored using Eddy Covariance (EC) and Bowen ratio energy balance (BREB) techniques-as well as developing new measurement strategies as needed. Conceptualizing, designing, constructing, maintaining as well as data collection and novel data processing is the purview of this position. Additionally, the role involves regular data collection and the upkeep of instrumentation, collating and processing data so that results can be clearly presented. The research will involve field experiments as well as data synthesis and model integration. The selected candidate is also expected to mentor undergraduate students, participate in grant writing, attend professional conferences, and publish peer-reviewed research articles. The estimated start date of this position is November 6, 2023. Screening of the applications will begin immediately and will continue until a suitable candidate is identified.

Qualifications

Qualifications and Responsibilities:

The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in Soil Science, have excellent academic records as well as strong oral and written communication skills. The ideal applicant will have 3 – 5 years experience and published research in micrometeorology including proven fieldwork within agricultural settings, experience and abilities to setup and maintain micro-meteorological instruments and analysis. The successful candidate will have a strong work ethic and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively. Proficiency in diverse areas is required, including designing, and conducting agricultural experiments, as well as creating and installing environmental instrumentation systems. The candidate must have significant experience with Eddy Covariance (EC) and Bowen Ratio Energy Balance (BREB) systems and instruments, as well as experience in soil sampling, geostatistics, remote sensing, data logger programming, and maintenance of meteorological equipment. A solid grasp of statistical and scientific programming is required, with preferred programming experience in R, Python and FORTRAN. The ideal candidate will bring a broad technical expertise with carbon sequestration using eddy covariance, knowledge of deep learning and data mining techniques, and the capability to create, design, and install soil and meteorological instruments. This position requires frequent travel to the experimental field sites so a valid drivers license is required.

Support:

This position is initially for one year with the possibility to be renewed for one more year depending on funding and satisfactory performance of the candidate. Salary and benefits are competitive.
Application:
Interested candidates should complete an online application and submit the following:
● A letter of interest describing the applicant’s suitability for the position
● Curriculum vitae
● Copies of undergraduate and graduate transcripts
● Contact information for seven professional references.
