About the Position:
This is a post-doctoral position within the Center for Strategic Leadership. Initial appointment is for one year. The successful candidate will serve as a member of a team and conduct substantive research contributing to development of a national-level strategy in the homeland security field. Postdoctoral fellows may also contribute to the development and delivery of graduate level curriculum.


  • Conduct research on issues related to their area of expertise, in support of existing CSL programs, under the guidance of a senior faculty member from CSL
  • Contribute as a member of a research team to the development of a national-level strategy in an area relevant to homeland security
  • Assist in all phases and required methodology development, research design, data collection and analysis activities
  • Assist in collaborative research team coordination across organizations and sites
  • Attend team meetings
  • Assist in the preparation of briefing materials and support briefings as requested
  • Teach/facilitate selected lessons as part of the Army War College curriculum
  • Publish at least one article through the U.S. Army War College Press or other reputable publication in collaboration with faculty lead
  • Conduct lectures and present approved research findings at academic or other professional venues
  • Perform other duties as directed by supervisors

    SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTORS/KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Applicants will be rated based on the criteria listed below:

    • Ph.D. or D.M. from an accredited institution in a discipline relevant to this U.S. Army War College Research Program i.e., Homeland Security, Criminal Justice, Emergency Management, Public Policy and Administration, or another relevant field of study, is preferred. Candidates within six months of completing a Ph.D. or D.M. may be considered. The degree should have been achieved no earlier than five years prior to the date of this announcement.
    • Demonstrated potential for high-quality research and analysis, writing and presentation that bridges the gap between theory and practice. The selecting official will consider the scholarly merit and relevance of the candidate's written research submission (see paragraph 6 under HOW TO APPLY, below).
    • Ability to coach graduate students in the production of innovative scholarship.
    • Evidence of the potential to communicate effectively with diverse audiences of practitioners, graduate students, scientists and faculty from other domains of expertise.
    • Ability to work collegially with diverse (military, civilian, international) graduate students, faculty, staff and administrators.

    Additional information

    • Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration.

    • Direct deposit of pay is required.
    • Salary includes applicable locality pay or Local Market Supplement.
