Principal Duties

Principal Duties:

The Department of English at Purdue University invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow specializing in applied linguistics or a related field. This is a two-year, full-time, 12-month position beginning on January 1, 2024 and ending on December 31, 2025.

The Fellow would work under the direction of Prof. Bradley Dilger (Department of English) as part of the Purdue branch of the inter-institutional Corpus & Repository of Writing (Crow) team (https://writecrow.org/). Prof. Elaine Francis (Department of English) and Prof. Yan Cong (School of Languages and Cultures) would also work with the Fellow to develop skills in experimental linguistics and Natural Language Processing research, respectively, and to collaborate on specific projects.

This position is not associated with any existing funded project. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to develop original collaborative research studies commensurate with their own background and interests, and will also be invited to join existing Crow and ExLing research projects (e.g. building the Crow corpus & repository).

Specific duties will include the following:

Take a leading role in writing five or more original research proposals and submitting them to the appropriate funding agencies (for example, National Endowment for the Humanities, National Council of Teachers of English, Humanities Without Walls, Mellon Foundation);
Take a leading role in conducting original research studies resulting in five or more co-authored papers submitted for publication to writing studies or applied linguistics journals;
Work with Professors Dilger, Francis, and Cong to mentor student researchers;


The position comes with an annual salary of $65,250.

 


Qualifications

Qualifications:

 

Required:

Ph.D. in English, Applied Linguistics, or a closely related discipline, and evidence of potential for creating and placing peer-reviewed publications and contributing to the development of funded research.

 


Preferred:

Experience with both qualitative and quantitative corpus analysis techniques; experience using Natural Language Processing or similar methods to study language use.
