POSITION SUMMARY:
The Department of Internal Medicine at the University of South Florida, Morsani College of Medicine is seeking a Research Associate to work in the lab of Dr. Liwang Cui, performing organized research on the molecular biology of the malaria parasite, focusing on the drug resistance and epigenetic regulation aspects; provide assistance on the training of postdoctoral scholars and students on malaria-related lab techniques. The lab is located at the USF Research Park on the main campus in Tampa. There are opportunities for collaboration within the Department of Internal Medicine, Global Health, and throughout the University of South Florida, including the Moffitt cancer institute. A strong emphasis is placed on career development, participation in national meetings, communication skills, grant and manuscript writing, interdisciplinary research, and implications of the basic research for vaccine development against falciparum malaria. Faculty mentors are committed to the career development of trainees. Applicants of outstanding caliber, who are self-motivated and independently driven, would be joining a highly collaborative, multidisciplinary training environment.
This is a project-dependent position and appointment at 100% effort. Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled or the search is closed.
RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist in molecular studies of the malaria parasite.
  • Creation and implementation of a research plan on functional genomics of the parasite.
  • Assist USF Health faculty in grant preparation and publication submission.
  • Supervision of graduate students or post-doctoral fellows in molecular biology of the malaria parasite
  • Responsible to a Chair or other appropriate higher-level administrator of a State university. 
  • Responsible for teaching, research, service, and related administrative activities.
  • Responsible for academic advising and related activities.  May represent the university, college/school, or department.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
MINIMUM:
Master's degree from an accredited institution with demonstrated record of academic research achievement, or professional qualifications in the field of specialization above those which would be equivalent to the highest degree. Must meet university criteria for appointment to the rank of Research Associate.
PREFERRED:
PhD, MD, MD/PhD terminal degree from an accredited institution in medicine or life sciences, biology, or related discipline. At least five years relevant research experience in molecular biology and parasitology. Strong track record of peer reviewed publications in parasitology. Experience with molecular laboratory techniques, including aseptic culture and molecular genetics of the malaria parasite.
