Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The International Faculty and Scholar Advisor is part of a team working with approximately 1,000 international faculty and scholars at the University. Reporting to the Assistant Director Faculty Scholar Immigration, International Student Scholar Services, within the Office of International Affairs. The International Faculty and Scholar Advisor has five major areas of responsibility: direct service to international faculty, scholars, trainees and interns; advising and processing the appropriate employment visas; administrative/technical/compliance responsibilities in support of a U.S. Government database and Federal labor laws; programming for UM students, faculty and staff; and interaction/communication with faculty, administrators, staff, and off-campus agencies. This position involves working with highly confidential and sensitive information.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
Bachelor’s degree

Experience:
  • Three (3) years of professional experience working in international education, international relations.
  • One (1) year of experience filing H-1B and J-1 applications for international faculty. 
  • Experience maintaining SEVIS records and auditable files for government compliance requirements. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Cross-cultural communication work and /or experience living/studying abroad. 
  • Knowledge of H-1B and/or J-1 visa regulations and immigration application processing required. 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. 
  • Excellent customer service and public speaking skills. 
  • Ability to apply discretionary judgment skills and maintain confidentiality and appropriately work with sensitive communication with students, faculty, staff and outside agencies.

Preferences:

Preferences:
  • Master’s degree in International Education, Student Counseling, or other relevant degree. Ability to compose and give presentations. 
  • Knowledge of the major information sources for international educators. Knowledge of a language other than English. Ability to create efficient and organized processes. Desire to continue to learn about new ideas, methods and subjects. Knowledge of and experience with educational technologies.

Additional Certifications:

U.S. Citizenship or Lawful Permanent Residence status required by federal regulations for DSO/ARO certification

Work is performed in an office environment and requires the ability to operate standard office equipment and keyboards. Must have the ability to lift and carry small parcels, packages and other items, to walk short distances, and drive a vehicle to deliver and pick up materials.
