Bay Area Executive Director
One Love Foundation in San Francisco, California
Date Posted 09/07/2020
Philanthropy-Senior/Executive Management
Employment Type Fulltime
Application Deadline Open until filled

One Love’s campaign is equal parts national and local in its scope. Nationally, One Love has created a mission, messaging and educational tools that standardize the language we use to teach young people about healthy and unhealthy relationships. Locally, One Love works on the ground with young people, schools, youth-facing community groups and social service partners to ensure that our programs are used in a way that is right for each community. Starting in 2017, One Love established on-the-ground teams in four cities to increase the velocity of our efforts in engagement and activation. Today we have staff on the ground in six areas and Executive Directors in five of those areas. By serving communities full-time, we know we can amplify a conversation about relationships that is changing and saving lives.

In each regional office, Executive Directors are the lead architects of and recruiters for the local campaign, charged with expanding, diversifying and deepening the participation of all types of participants. EDs are true believers in our common-sense approach to prevention and they are highly comfortable recruiting others to the cause. Given the start-up nature of our organization, Executive Directors play a critical role in securing support to fuel growth, resourcefully identifying new ways to raise funds to support both local and national work as well as expand One Love’s educational footprint and base of volunteer participation. With partnering at the core of our work, EDs also oversee our program outreach efforts, experimenting with new strategies to engage individuals and partner organizations in deeper and mutually beneficial ways. Their on-the-ground efforts can then be used as models for community engagement in other cities as well.

  • Develop and execute a strategic plan for One Love’s growth in the short-, medium- and long-term

  • Expand One Love’s programmatic reach through middle school, high school and college/community engagement as well as through partnerships with youth-facing organizations who want the young people they love to benefit from this conversation

  • Expand and retain the financial base of support for this work through development strategies including annual giving and major gifts solicitation, special events, community fundraising, foundation grants, corporate grants, and possibly government support

  • Develop a dedicated and enthusiastic corps of community leaders, both young people and adults, who help drive participation and engagement in their communities as a key element of shifting community norms

  • Establish a Regional Leadership Council to serve as a leadership group and crucial partners for the Regional ED. RLCs advise on best strategies for impact in the city they love, and inspiring their support is critical and expected to achieve growth

  • Support and develop a small but A+ team on the ground

  • Be an influential and collaborative leader locally, advocating for this work and recruiting collaborators and partners who share our vision and believe in the power of communities, and young people, to achieve ambitious goals

  • Closely collaborate with the broader One Love team as well as other Regional EDs to continue to:

    • Iterate and evolve our model for impact

    • Establish best practices for regional operations

    • Innovate to develop new approaches to education and engagement

    • Honestly assess how goals are being met

  • Keep a constant eye on progress to develop more concrete measures of success in changing the statistics around relationship abuse

One Love is committed to building a truly diverse and inclusive organization, and to providing equal employment opportunities to all qualified individuals. One Love does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, ethnicity, age, religion, sex, gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, national origin, or disability. One in three women and nearly one in three men experience relationship abuse in their lifetime.[1] Young women ages 16-24 are at three times greater risk.[2] More than 1 in 2 transgender people will experience intimate partner violence in their lifetime.[3] Three women a day are killed by their current or former partner in the US alone. The statistics around relationship abuse make it a public health epidemic that all of us have a stake in changing.

One Love exists for one reason: Yeardley Love was killed, and her death was preventable if anyone in her life understood the warning signs of an unhealthy and increasingly dangerous relationship. This realization is the driving force behind our work to educate young people about relationship abuse and rally them in a campaign that can change the statistics.

What started in 2010 out of a family’s wish to honor their daughter, expanded in 2015 into a national educational campaign to improve young people’s understanding of healthy versus unhealthy relationships. Using emotionally compelling content, and a peer workshop model, we are reaching hundreds of thousands of young people, teaching them how to recognize signs of abuse, and providing them with the language and tools required to navigate these relationships.

Communities are engaging in this conversation across the country and increasingly around the world. Today, One Love is the national leader in educating young people about relationship health, educating more than a million young people through an in-person One Love workshop and training 23,000 facilitators to lead these workshops in their communities. One Love’s #ThatsNotLove and #LoveBetter digital campaigns have had over 100 million views online.

As we continue to scale this campaign, engaging even more young people as leaders of this work, we are focused on ensuring the campaign reflects the perspectives and interests of all who are impacted by this issue. Working closely with individuals at schools and colleges, youth-facing organizations, and domestic violence advocates across the country, we will reach more people and engage more voices in a truly human campaign for change. As Sharon Love, Yeardley’s mom, said early on, “We model off Mothers Against Drunk Driving in our approach, and our goal is to change the statistics and social norms around abuse in one generation.”
