BIOINFORMATICS PROGR 4 (Bioinformatics Programmer)
Department Description
The UC Davis Genome Center in the College of Biological Sciences, coordinates interdisciplinary research in the areas of genomics, metabolomics, proteomics and bioinformatics, and is involved in the training of undergraduate students, graduate students and postdoctoral scholars. Annual funding is approximately $21 million from multiple sources. Approximately $6-7 million of annual expenditures come through the Center's six service Cores, which provide genomic technologies to approximately 700 customers both on and off-campus.
This position works in Genome Center Director Blake Meyers' lab, which focuses on RNA analysis in a wide variety of plant species, as well as a small number of non-plant species. Team members provide expertise and build infrastructure to carry out complex acquisition, curation and distribution of data sets, as well as to develop and perform computation and analyses biological questions from genomics and RNA biology.
Job Summary
Reporting to Genome Center Director and Professor Blake Meyers, work within the lab's data analysis team and collaborate with postdocs, technicians, students, and external groups on the processing, storage, visualization, and analysis of high-throughput biological data.
Use databases, applications, pipelines, and analysis techniques to process and analyze biological data generated from omics scale data, focusing on RNA data. Build websites and genome browsers to display these data.
Participate in training events to educate team members and collaborators, on- and off- campus, in the use of the bioinformatics tools and workflows developed for RNA data. Supervise graduate / undergraduate students on well-defined projects.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
    Minimum Education/Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in bioinformatics, computational biology, computational chemistry, biostatistics, or related discipline, and/or 10+ years of professional experience in Bioinformatics.
  • Experience with computer languages commonly used in scientific programming (ex. C/C++, python, R, or similar languages).
  • Experience working in a UNIX/LINUX command line environment, specifically for bioinformatics data analyst.
  • Knowledge and experience in bioinformatics methods, applications programming, web development, data structures, relational databases, and operating systems.
    Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):
  • Knowledge and skills in computer programming.
  • Project management skills to organize workload and complete complex tasks in a timely manner with attention to detail; and take direction and work efficiently and effectively within a team environment; and meet deadlines.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills to work well with people from various organizational disciplines and with people who have varying degrees of technical experience.
    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
    Preferred Education/Experience:
  • Advanced degree in bioinformatics, computational biology, computational chemistry, biostatistics, or related discipline.
  • Extensive experience exercising management skills, including critical thinking, planning, problem-solving and decision-making to take independent action and exercise authority.
