Overview
The Douglass Developmental Disabilities Center (DDDC) an integral part of the Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology (GSAPP) at Rutgers University-New Brunswick has been serving the needs of people with autism spectrum disorders since 1972, their families and their schools. As an Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) program, we use these principles to organize our delivery of services. We recognize our responsibility to work collaboratively with the families of the children and adults we serve, and with the agencies that fund their treatment.
As a university-based program, our commitment includes the education of undergraduate and graduate students and the dissemination of knowledge through research, training, and consultative services. We also provide information about the treatment and education of people with autism spectrum disorders to the professional community and the general public.
Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a School Nurse for Douglass Developmental Disabilities Center. This position provides general nursing services, including triage of patients, and treatment of minor injuries at the Douglass Developmental Disabilities Center. The School Nurse

  • Assesses/addresses medical needs of DDDC students/clients and staff.
  • Demonstrates fundamental knowledge of general medical procedures and relevant federal, state, and University policy and
    law.
  • Appropriately implements procedures to assess and address both routine health concerns and those involving medical crises.
  • Appropriately maintains and distributes prescribed medication.
  • Completes mandated screenings (e.g., height/weight, scoliosis).
  • Monitors students with chronic health conditions (e.g., asthma, diabetes).
  • Supports classrooms of students with severe behavior challenges, including implementing crisis management techniques (e.g., defensive techniques, physical restraint).
  • Assembles, compiles and maintains necessary documentation.
  • Provides for staff and nursing student training.
  • Collaborates with families on medical issues related to students with autism spectrum disorder.
  • Collaborates with other professionals (e.g., physicians, behavior analysts)
  • Collaborates with school staff on the skill acquisition of health care-related skills.
  • Maintains a professional manner that enhances the DDDC’s efforts to provide appropriate health care to students/clients and staff.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with a license to practice in the State of New Jersey.

Certifications/Licenses
  • Valid NJ Nursing License.
  • School Nurse Certification or NJ Substitute School Nurse eligible.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Working knowledge, of University Regulations.
  • Compliant with HIPAA Regulations.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Skill in writing and in public speaking.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Individual must be able to work with children and adults who may engage in aggressive behaviors that require physical intervention.
  • Following training must be physically capable of safely providing crisis management techniques including restraining, lifting, and blocking individuals with challenging behavior.

Special Conditions
  • In accordance with New Jersey State law, applicants must agree to undergo and authorize the University to conduct fingerprint, criminal history and/or child abuse record checks with various law enforcement agencies, including, but not limited to: The FBI Identification Division and/or the NJ Division of State Police, Bureau of Identification. Applicants must also assume costs incurred by the University associated with the background investigations, whether required by statute or not.
  • In accordance with state mandated requirements, a Mantoux test will be administered to the successful applicant to verify the absence of tuberculosis. In addition, the successful applicant, at the cost of the University, will be required to be inoculated against Hepatitis B, unless the successful applicant waives this vaccination in writing.
