In Carnegie Mellon University's Department of Mechanical Engineering (MechE), our faculty members, researchers, and students are revolutionizing focus areas in sophisticated manufacturing, bioengineering, computational engineering, energy and the environment, product design, and robotics. In addition, they are using their expertise in interdisciplinary research centers across the university.

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to join the Carmel Majidi Lab in MechE. In this role, you will carry out advanced independent and/or advised research to achieve the objectives of the research project. This position will require an in depth knowledge of a specialized field, process, or subject area and may involve coordinating and implementing complex research plans, the development of methods of research, testing and data collection, analysis and evaluation, and writing reports which contain descriptive, analytical and evaluative content. You will acquire the professional skills needed to pursue a career path of your choosing. You will be responsible for design, synthesize, and characterize multifunctional inks capable for printed soft electronics and transducers. The inks should be composed of soft polymers, fluids, and nanoparticles and exhibit high electrical conductivity, piezoelectric properties, or thermoelectric coupling and such other tasks that are assigned to you.

Professor Majidi's career mission is to discover materials, hardware architectures, and fabrication methods that allow robots and machines to behave like soft biological organisms, and be safe for contact with humans. The aim is to replace the bulky and rigid hardware in existing robots with soft, lightweight, and deformable technologies that match the functionality of natural biological tissue. Currently, his group is focused on filled-elastomer composites and soft microfluidic systems that exhibit unique combinations of mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties and can function as "artificial" skin, nervous tissue, and muscle for soft robotics and wearables. He's particularly interested in approaches that are practical from a rapid prototyping and robotics implementation perspective. This includes efforts to enable robust mechanical and electrical interfacing between soft-matter systems and conventional microelectronics and hardware.

Core responsibilities include:

  • Performing independent research and maintaining laboratory equipment.

  • Reporting progress to project advisor, research collaborators, and funding sponsors

  • Documenting research accomplishments and reporting work in a peer-reviewed journal.

  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • PhD in mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, materials science, electrical engineering, chemistry, or related disciplines

Requirements:

  • Experience performing research on topics with soft materials engineering, printed electronics, soft robotics, and/or liquid metals required.

  • 3-5 years of required experience

  • Graduate level research experience on topics related to soft materials engineering, printed electronics, soft robotics, and/or liquid metal is required.
