Classification Title Postdoctoral Researcher
Working Title Postdoctoral Research Associate
Brief Position Overview
The Institute on Ecosystems at Montana State University (Bozeman, MT) is looking for a postdoctoral researcher to develop an assessment of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. The postdoc will work directly for the Greater Yellowstone Network – National Park Service and in collaboration with agency partners through the Greater Yellowstone Coordinating Committee. The assessment will consist of utilizing existing natural resource data from public lands across the ecosystem while using agency management plans, reports, other climate assessments, and on-going work to inform this effort. The individual will determine the feasibility of using existing data, focus analyses of status where data are available but not yet summarized across the ecosystem, and identify gaps for resources that do not have information available to assess. The individual will coordinate the selection of a select few resources to conduct a climate vulnerability analysis, which will entail evaluating a resource’s sensitivity to climate and using that information to make forecasts of future resource condition using climate projections. This may also include developing climate pivot points or other quantitative assessments of likely future conditions (i.e., are conditions of the resources approaching a point of management concern) to help inform management. This work will be done in the context of the Climate Smart and Resist – Accept – Direct (RAD) frameworks to help guide management goals and conservation strategies. The individual will help to lead conversations related to this assessment at the GYE Biennial Science Conference, prepare products that can be used by managers and the scientific community, and identify the next steps to ensure future momentum. The assessment will be used by the Greater Yellowstone Coordinating Committee to inform their strategic priorities.

General Statement
The Institute on Ecosystems is a community of scholars and partners with a shared vision to advance integrated environmental sciences and related fields. We draw on the extraordinary landscapes of Montana and beyond to understand complex ecosystems including the interconnectedness of people and nature.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Work with partners to learn about existing broad regional assessments, targeted resources of concern/interest, and available data that could be used to complete an assessment for the GYE. Document already available downscale species and habitat models, vulnerability analyses, climate gradient analyses, and other efforts that can inform conservation investments.
  • Work with a core team of professional scientists and land managers, and external partners to define data and analysis needs that will be useful for developing a forward-thinking assessment for the Greater Yellowstone; assist with the interpretation of findings that can be used to guide conservation prioritization and application.
  • Assess available data for resources to determine feasibility of using the resource data in the assessment and possibly in a vulnerability assessment for that resource of interest.
  • Assess climate adaptation models and data being developed through agency/university partnerships to inform on their utility for long-term conservation planning.
  • Create linkages among broad-scale modeling exercises and fine-scaled application of data in resource prioritization, and address uncertainty at finer scales of resolution.
  • Ability to produce and/or work with geographic/science communication specialists to create accurate, informative, and visually pleasing maps/graphics/other for projects and outreach or educational materials.
  • Coordinate work, participate on regularly scheduled meetings to provide updates, and take input from core-team members and partners.
  • Interact with managers and scientists to interpret and make data that will be useful in a forward-thinking assessment.
  • Develop product(s) in collaboration with science communication specialists that are usable by land management agencies in decision making. Products may include but are not limited to reports, visualization tools, publications, story maps, and web articles.
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • An advanced degree such as a PhD in Ecology, Environmental Sciences, Geospatial Analysis, Water Resources, or Natural Resources and experience in conservation planning, preferably with a strong background in natural resources or related physical science.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Access, SQL, or similar database software.
  • Advanced experience with ArcPro.
  • Strong background in using large datasets for analysis to determine status of a species or topic of interest.
  • Experience with managing data, statistical analysis, and developing data visualizations.
  • Proficiency with R, Python, or other programming languages used in data analysis.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Organized and strong verbal and written communication skills. Communicating with a wide range of audiences (managers, public, scientific).
  • Montana State University conducts background checks on all final candidates, and NPS will conduct a federal background check. A tentative position offer is contingent upon passing both background check processes.
  • Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Record of scholarship and demonstration of expertise with statistical analyses and modeling of monitoring data collected from natural habitats and wild populations (e.g., GAMs, occupancy modeling).
  • Demonstrated skill in being part of a team to generate an adaptive process for completing a project.
  • Experience communicating science using non-traditional methods (e.g., Story Maps, Tableau, etc.).
  • The Successful Candidate Will
