Position Summary

The David J. Ellis Antimicrobial Stewardship & Dairy Health Management Laboratory of Dr. Pamela Ruegg in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Michigan State University seeks a Research Technologist (100% FTE) to manage and perform laboratory and field based research focused on improving understanding of antimicrobial stewardship and bacterial diseases on dairy farms. Our laboratory combines epidemiological data with microbiological methods to study bacterial diseases of dairy cows. Our emphasis is to improve udder health while ensuring that evidence based antibiotic treatments are used only when necessary to sustain well-being of dairy animals and economic sustainability of the farms. In addition to microbiological techniques used in our laboratory, we analyze veterinary treatment records and use specialized computer software to quantify antimicrobial treatments. Familiarity with laboratory methods used to study bacteria associated with diseases of farm animals is expected. The successful applicant will be highly motivated, organized, and creative, and enjoy working independently and as part of a research team. 

Research Support:  65%

  • Able to learn and perform laboratory methods used to study bacteria associated with diseases of farm animals
  • Handling of dairy cattle and visiting commercial dairy farms to collect milk and other biological samples
  • Organize and assess data collected about diseases and treatments of dairy cattle
  • Contribute to development of research proposals and experimental protocols
  • Assists in coordinating research in the laboratory and on farms to meet research goals
  • Compiles and summarizes results and participates in preparing reports, manuscripts and articles for publication.

Administrative: 25%

  • Oversee and maintain laboratory operations
  • Assist with ordering equipment and supplies, ACUC and IRB applications and maintenance of laboratory records/protocols
  • Participate in lab meetings, outreach activities and other activities
  • Communicates with other team members and collaborators to schedule experiments.

Training: 10%

  • Responsible for training and supervising undergraduate and graduate students and will work with postdoctoral fellows

This is a limited term position funded for 12 months from date of hire with possible extension contingent upon funding renewal. 


Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge normally acquired by completing a four- year college degree program in the specific field of research employment or other related field; six months to one year of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience performing basic research techniques specific to the area of research employment such as: Tissue Culture, Analytical Research, Molecular Biology, Agriculture, Social Science, Physiology, Medical Research, etc., including the use and calibration of related equipment; word processing, spreadsheet; database and/or desktop publishing software; presentation software; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The job may require the appropriate pesticide applicator's registration/certification, and/or experience working with potentially dangerous research animals specific to the area of research employment.


Desired Qualifications

Experience in microbiological methods used to culture milk and working with BSL-2 pathogens is desirable. Familiarity with treatment protocols used on dairy farms is an asset. Experience preparing data for publication and for submission for grant proposals. Strong interpersonal skills, including the capacity to communicate with researchers and practicing veterinarians who have a variety of experience and stages of academic training. A graduate degree (MS or PhD) in veterinary medicine, microbiology, microbial ecology or molecular biology, or equivalent experience is desired. Ability and willingness to learn new procedures and protocols is an asset. Several years of related work experience in overseeing research projects, visiting dairy farms and collecting samples from animals, basic understanding of laboratory operations, operating and maintaining a variety of laboratory equipment, performing specialized and analytical and research techniques, and designing research experiments. A valid vehicle operator’s license is required.
