Job Summary

The Associate Dean is a member of the Graduate Division leadership team and plays a critical role in ensuring the academic success of students and the overall academic quality of the University of California, San Francisco Graduate Division programs. This position requires strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills and a deep understanding of academic policies, procedures, and best practices. The Associate Dean will serve as the Dean's deputy, both as a key advisor to the Dean and as a substitute for the Dean as necessary on campus and system-wide committees and at community and fundraising events.

This position will be the primary liaison and point of contact for internal and external queries about the Graduate Division and its academic programs, practices, and policies, including collaboration with Human Resources and Labor and Employee Relations; and advising and directing faculty and staff in interpreting, analyzing, and implementing collective bargaining agreements. In all aspects of their role, the Associate Dean will apply frameworks and principles of justice, equity, diversity and inclusion in serving and advocating for graduate students. The Associate Dean's portfolio includes curriculum development and review; faculty development and support; academic policy development; and student academic support, including but not limited to admissions and progression; accreditation and program assessment; graduate student data collection, analysis, and reporting; and graduate program administration coordination.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

The Graduate Division functions as the institutional home for graduate education and postdoctoral training at UCSF, offering 20 PhD programs in basic, translational, and social/population sciences; 12 master's degree programs; and two professional doctorates serving more than 1,000 students and 1,100 postdoctoral scholars. The Graduate Division serves as the primary advocate for graduate students and postdocs and promotes excellence in all graduate and postdoc training programs.


Required Qualifications

  • Terminal degree in a related area (PhD, JD, MD, etc.) and / or equivalent experience/training required
  • 10 years or more academic experience and recognized expertise in graduate education
  • Demonstrated expertise with program building within a leading academic institution for handling administrative, budgetary, human resources and financial principles and practices.
  • Expert oral and written communication skills
  • Expert ability to think creatively and independently on concepts requiring advanced analytical skills.
  • Expert interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse groups to achieve results
  • Expert ability to work collaboratively with dynamic and diverse group of faculty, staff and students
  • Expert fundraising experience
  • Expert negotiation skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated expertise building collaborations between academia, industrial and / or governmental agencies
  • Leadership experience in academic and / or government agencies
